Deal Or No Deal: Celebrity Jackpot Specials kicked off with a bang this week with Gold Logie-winning comedian Tom Gleeson in the hot seat. Channel 10 announced earlier this month that they would air six hour-long episodes of the game show featuring various Australian celebrities playing for the chance to win $250,000 for their chosen charity.

During his appearance in Monday night’s episode, Hard Quiz host Tom Gleeson took aim at the show’s infamous ‘banker’ and suggested he doesn’t know how to do his job. Tom argued that the bank offer he received mid-way through the episode of $12,450 should’ve been much higher considering the average of the remaining briefcases was at least six figures.

“Does the banker not know maths? That is not the average of what’s left,” he remarked.

“Do you know maths?” host Grant Denyer asked curiously, to which Tom replied, “Yeah, I’ve got a maths degree. Even between $250,000 and whatever the lowest [briefcase] is, it’s easily got to be more than $100,000 as average. Easily!

“You have a banker that does now know how to do mathematics!”

Grant then received a call from the banker before Tom snatched the phone and shouted, “You don’t know maths!”.

“You’re totally right, you’ve caught him out,” Grant responded.

Tom was then given a new offer from the banker of $9,670, which was significantly lower than the initial figure and left the audience in stitches.

“Oh. I don’t like this,” Tom said. “I don’t like this banker. He doesn’t know maths, and he’s gutless too. He doesn’t even show his face! He’s probably hiding under the tiers here somewhere.”

The Taskmaster star turned down the deal and later received an offer of $42,999, which he accepted and donated to his charity Feel the Magic.

Viewers took to social media to praise Tom following the episode, which also featured some of Australia’s funniest comedians holding briefcases.

“Fantastic show tonight,” one person wrote, while another added, “Tom Gleeson is extremely underrated as a comedian just incredibly witty [and] hilarious”.

“Can’t stop laughing when he said ‘You don’t know maths’ then the banker dropped the offer,” a third commented.
