The Morning Show's birthday surprise for Kylie Gillies goes wrong

Larry Emdur's on-air celebration didn't quite go to plan.

The Morning Show’s Larry Emdur organised a sweet on-air celebration for his co-host Kylie Gillies’ birthday during Thursday morning’s broadcast, bringing out a cake and colourful balloons.

However, the surprise didn’t quite go to plan as the duo’s shared teleprompter ruined the well-kept secret.

Larry spoke candidly with viewers in the final segment of the breakfast show and admitted things hadn’t worked out how he had hoped.

“You know, sometimes we try and do a big surprise here, and then next minute the script comes up on the autocue,” he joked, pointing out that the text said ‘Kylie cake’.

Kylie then feigned surprise as the crew wheeled in a two-tiered butterfly cake and brought out a large bouquet of flowers and balloons.

“Happy happy birthday Kylie Gillies!” Larry exclaimed. “Bring out the cake, bring the flowers, bring the balloons, bring the champagne!”

Larry joked that Kylie’s impressive cake was the same one they’ll be using at King Charles’ coronation on the weekend.

“Sorry Camilla and Charles you’re not getting it, it’s all mine,” Kylie laughed. “Thank you so much, guys!”

Kylie then went to cut the cake as Larry said, “Then you’ve gotta kiss the closest boy!”, to which Kylie put the knife back down on the table and laughed.

“I told everyone to please ignore my birthday, was kinda nice that they didn’t,” she wrote in the caption. “Mind you it does take a ‘Mum’ birthday for the boys to all assemble at the same place and time!”

Her post was quickly flooded with birthday messages from her colleagues and famous followers, including Todd McKenney, Jessica Rowe and Poh Ling Yeow.
