The Block fans have called out the show’s producers after a major editing fail in Monday night’s episode left them outraged. Following the guest bedroom and laundry reveals, the teams gathered in House 4 to watch what host Scott Cam said was “a sneak peek at episode one” before it aired on TV.

The teams sat around with members of the crew - minus Kylie who had decided to go to bed early - and excitedly watched themselves on TV for the very first time. While the ‘episode’ began with Scott’s introduction to the season and interviews with the teams before they arrived on the construction site, viewers at home quickly realised that the contestants weren’t actually watching episode one.

For starters, Maddy and Charlotte featured heavily in the footage even though they didn’t arrive until week five when Paige and Jesse had quit and weren’t revealed as contestants beforehand. Subsequently, the ‘episode’ had a strong focus on Maddy and Charlotte being accused of lying to the other teams about their background as house flippers.

Multiple contestants were also shown speaking negatively about the sisters behind their backs, including Kylie saying they’re “not welcome”, which was never actually featured in episode one.

Maddy and Charlotte were clearly taken aback seeing themselves in the ‘episode’, with Charlotte admitting in their piece-to-camera interview: “We didn’t expect to be featured, but we were featured.”

“It’s not pleasant, but I understand we’re on a reality TV show. Like, this is what we’ve signed up for,” Maddy said. “You just don’t ever expect maybe that you would be the reason a group of eight adults come together and tear you apart.”

For her part, Mimi acknowledged in her piece-to-camera interview that what she said would have been “triggering” and “confronting” for the girls to see.

“I don’t regret anything I said because that’s how I felt at the time, but I do regret the body language I was using,’ she said. “That was inappropriate, that was unnecessary.”

Viewers quickly took to social media to express their outrage over the episode and the fact that producers seemingly included footage of Maddy and Charlotte being ostracised purely to create drama in the final weeks of the competition.

“Scotty that was not episode one of the season that you showed last night… That was the most horrible medley of all of the b***hiest moments! What the heck are they playing at?” one person commented.

“It was clearly not ‘episode one’ it was a compilation of trigger moments from the first five weeks. This absolutely sucks a** and was clearly designed to stoke the fire and contribute to the group bullying of the new girls. It really didn't sit well with me,” another added.

“The girls weren't in the first episode, I'm guessing what was shown was a special cut designed just to get responses. Pure producer BS,” a third remarked, followed by someone else who said, “I am honestly so disgusted. The whole episode was a disaster”.

“My god, what in the Married At First Sight was tonight's episode? A screening of previous episodes just to create drama?! Yuck,” a different user remarked, while one fan wrote, “Yeah that was a gross producer move that you’d normally see on Love Island or Big Brother, not The Block. Served no purpose other than to give the situation a prolonged life. I hope the other contestants saw that footage and felt ashamed by the way they conducted themselves”.

Maddy also took to the comments in a popular Facebook group to share her thoughts on the episode and said she and Charlotte appreciate all of the support from viewers.

“I had tears in my eyes watching tonight (there's nothing like watching your trauma play out on screen 4 nights a week),” she said. “Thank you for your support, you have no idea how healing it is knowing we’re not alone anymore.”

Maddy and Charlotte’s mother Susie also left a comment saying she is “beyond proud” of her “beautiful, kind, courageous” daughters.

“They have overcome the greatest adversity with the utmost grace,” she wrote. “As parents, we cannot fault one minute of their time on The Block and are so grateful that some others are showing them kindness - it is unbelievably hard to watch it all play out on television and know there is nothing we can do to protect them.”
