The Block's Maddy and Charlotte break silence on co-stars' 'cruel' behaviour: 'Gang mentality'
EXCLUSIVE: Maddy and Charlotte speak out about being ‘bullied’ during filming.
The Block’s newest team Maddy and Charlotte have arguably had one of the most difficult experiences on the reality show that viewers have ever seen. Not only were they brought in halfway through filming after Paige and Jesse quit, but their builder walked off shortly after they arrived and they’ve also been completely ostracised by their co-stars from the get-go.
Just a few weeks after they entered the competition, Mimi was caught gossiping about the sisters and telling the other teams that they “need more depth and drama in their personalities” - even though she had barely tried to get to know them. The cast was also furious last week when they discovered Maddy and Charlotte were professional house flippers in the real world and accused them of “lying” about their experience, although they had already told a majority of people in the cast about their side hustle.
The drama came to a head during Sunday night’s episode when host Scott Cam announced they had won the week and Kylie and Brad refused to clap. The married couple, who share four children, were furious with the outcome and told the cameras they thought the competition was “rigged” and that Maddy and Charlotte were “the most hated people on The Block”.

While the sisters have kept quiet about their co-stars’ behaviour so far, they’ve now officially broken their silence and called out the “bullying” they endured during filming. Maddy exclusively tells Yahoo Lifestyle that she’s found it quite difficult watching the series because it’s “triggering” seeing how the other contestants treated them.
“Sunday night’s episode made me really upset. I was like, I can’t watch this. These people are being cruel to us and I don't really understand why,” she says. “We strive to be kind to people in every circumstance, and then to have someone who's just blatantly choosing to be unsupportive and unkind, it’s just not a nice feeling at all. We didn't do anything to them to deserve that behaviour.
“We were nothing but supportive when [Kylie and Brad] won the week before. It was their anniversary and I said to Kylie, ‘I'm so excited you won, how perfect it’s your anniversary dinner!’. We weren't bitter, we congratulated them, we were excited for them, we celebrated. And so to not get that in return is disappointing, considering they're way older than us and have four children. You just kind of expect more from any human, really.”
Why are the other contestants so 'rude' to Maddy and Charlotte?
Maddy admits that she and Charlotte honestly have no idea why their co-stars were so “hostile” towards them during filming as they hadn’t done anything wrong.
“It just made us really upset because we were new,” Maddy shares. “It's like when you're the new kid at school, you expect someone to go, ‘Hey, let me show you the ropes! Let me take you under our wing! Come for dinner with us! Come to drinks with us! Let me pop in and put my head through the door and ask how you’re going!’. It doesn't have to be anything crazy, but just a little bit of inclusion was kind of what we were expecting.
“And so I think to not get that at all and then to get people that were genuinely unsupportive - not just like, ‘Oh, we didn't really make an effort’. It was like, no, you're not clapping and you're not hugging. They’re going out of their way to stir the pot and be rude. It's gang mentality. It's bullying and it's not kind.”
Meanwhile, Charlotte says she’s since come to terms with the fact that Kylie’s blatant dislike towards them has nothing to do with their personalities.
“Before we’d even met Kylie she had made up her mind that she wasn't going to like the new contestants,” she remarks. “And then even after we met her, she made no effort. She glared at us up and down as soon as she saw us. So I think from the beginning, no matter who we were or what we had done, Kylie was never going to like us.”
“Honestly, I think that they just probably aren't the most inclusive bunch of people,” Maddy adds.
Maddy and Charlotte's surprising friendship with last year's contestants
Although they haven’t built any strong connections with their co-stars at this point in the competition, Maddy and Charlotte immediately bonded with last year’s contestants Eliza and Liberty when they made an appearance in Monday night’s episode.
“We were so lonely and so isolated and we felt so out of our depth and unsupported by the other contestants, so to have Eliza and Liberty, who are just such a breath of fresh air and so kind and so funny and just so beautiful, it was exactly what we needed at the right time,” Maddy details.

The sisters describe the meeting as “the best experience ever” as it finally allowed them to feel like a part of “The Block family” that they’ve always wanted to be in.
“We had dreams as kids like, ‘We’re gonna have this Block family and you're bonded for life and you have this shared experience’,” Maddy continues. “And so to not have that with the other contestants, but to have that with someone like Eliza and Liberty was just so precious for us, and we were so grateful when we had such a great time. It was exactly what we needed.
“We honestly just needed a support person, and they were exactly that and they continued to support us throughout the whole season. We’re just so grateful.”
