Viewers notice odd detail in new reality show Dream Home: 'Seen this before'
Fans have drawn comparisons to another Channel Seven renovation series.
Following months of anticipation, Channel Seven’s new reality show Dream Home premiered on Sunday night to a mixed response from viewers. The series, which is hosted by Dr Chris Brown following his move from Network 10, follows six pairs of everyday Aussies as they design and rebuild each other’s dilapidated houses and transform them into incredible new dream homes.
While fans took to social media during the episode to praise Chris’ return to TV screens, they were quick to point out that Dream Home has a very similar concept to a previous renovation series on Seven. Many fans said the show was “identical” to House Rules, which aired from 2013 to 2020 and also saw state-based teams renovating each other’s homes.
“So this is basically #HouseRules rebranded? That’s what I'm getting from this,” one person wrote, while another added, “I think I’ve seen this show before, didn’t Johanna Griggs host it?”.
“Not sure if House Rules or Dream Home, same same tbh,” a third shared, followed by someone else who said, “When #HouseRules gets cancelled and Channel 7 bring us #DreamHomeAU”.
“So #DreamHomeAU is a reincarnation of House Rules? From the commercials, I was expecting it to be more of a surprise down on their luck couples to make their wish come true type show, not a competition,” a different user commented.
It appears Channel Seven isn’t completely unaware of the similarities between the shows as it posted a promo for Dream Home on the official Instagram account for House Rules - which has been inactive since 2021.
“Loved House Rules? Dream Home will feature some of the biggest and most life-changing renovations Australia has ever seen, hosted by Dr Chris Brown,” they shared to the page’s 66,000 followers.

Regardless of the comparisons, there were plenty of viewers who enjoyed the premiere episode and said they were looking forward to the rest of the series.
“One episode down and I am hooked. Genuine people and a great outcome for everyone,” a fan shared, with someone else writing, “Such a great show, loving it!”.
“I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected to tbh. Love all the different personalities,” another remarked.
Scott Cam shares his thoughts on Dream Home
Following the show’s announcement in August last year, The Block host Scott Cam shared his honest thoughts on the rival series with Yahoo Lifestyle.
“Stay off my turf, Browny!” he joked, adding, “Chris is a great mate of mine and good luck to him.
“Competition is healthy and if his show rates reasonably well, that means that people are still interested in this style of television. As soon as they stop watching other shows or our show, then that's the end of that style.”

Scott went on to say that he’d never wish “bad luck” on anyone making TV because he knows firsthand how hard it is to do.
“We don't want them to beat us, of course, if they go head to head, but we don't want them to dismally fail,” he continued. “I know what it’s like.”
