Ivanka Trump accused of 'trolling everyone' with inauguration outfit

Ivanka Trump got people on social media talking after attending her father, Donald Trump's, second presidential inauguration on January 20. Dressed in a dark green skirt suit and a matching hat teamed with black tights and shoes, many drew comparisons to the dystopian television series The Handmaid's Tale, with some speculating the look couldn't have been an accident.

While reactions online were mixed, with some complimenting the "chic" look, many pointed out its striking resemblance to those worn by the Commanders' wives in the TV adaption of Margaret Atwood's harrowing novel. In both the book and the series, the wealthy women wear dark teal dresses and cloaks, while the Handmaids are forced to wear red dresses and capes with white bonnets to conceal their faces.

Ivanka Trump draws Handmaid's Tale comparisons

If you're not familiar with The Handmaid's Tale, the story centres on the Republic of Gilead, a totalitarian society that has overthrown the United States government. Declining birth rates have led to women being stripped of their reproductive rights, and those who can carry children (the handmaids) are forced to produce them for the Commanders who are ruling Gilead.

Many speculated online that Ivanka's look for the inauguration wasn't an accident.

"It’s 100% intentional," one person commented on Instagram.

"I swear they are trolling everyone," another commented with someone else saying, "The resemblance is uncanny."

It's not the first time Ivanka's outfit choices have been compared to The Handmaid's Tale. Over the years, people have expressed this notion numerous times on social media, with one person doing a side-by-side comparison in 2019, and another tweeting the sentiment in 2017.

Not everyone drew the comparisons to the TV series though, with some thinking Ivanka looked the picture of class.
