The Block's Courtney and Grant reveal unique strategy after first win: 'Important'
EXCLUSIVE: The fan-favourite couple open up about their surprising game plan on the reality show.
After finishing in second place two weeks in a row, Courtney and Grant finally won their first room reveal during Sunday night’s nail-biting episode of The Block. The Sydney-based married couple received a score of 28 points for their Moderterranean-style main ensuite bathroom, with the judges praising them on the level of quality and muted palette that’s both “classic” and “sexy”.
“It’s so current,” Darren Palmer remarked. “That checkerboard pattern and micro cement and coloured stone and travertine, it’s like, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.”
Speaking with Yahoo Lifestyle about their win, Grant admits that his most prominent memory from filming the episode was feeling a sense of relief.
“Don’t get me wrong, I was definitely satisfied, but I know we were relieved to just finally get a win,” he says. “We entered the competition confident and we’re very competitive, so missing out on two rooms, I still think back like, ‘What could we have been done differently to get that half a point and an extra $20,000, plus all that furniture?’. But it was so good to get a win.”

Courtney adds that their long-awaited win finally assured them they were on the right track with their Moderterranean style and “doing something right”.
“When you're losing by half a point two weeks in a row, it’s like, ‘Okay, should we have done this style?’,” she remarks. “It's not that we were second guessing ourselves, I think we were pretty confident the whole way through like, ‘No, this is going to work, we’ll get to the end game’, but you do have that sense of doubt when you're not winning.”
Courtney and Grant's strategy on The Block
While they admit to being “very competitive” and determined to win every week, Courtney and Grant share that they had a strategy that involved never comparing their work to their competitors.
“We said coming in that if we start looking over the fence and wondering whether ours is better than theirs or whatever it might be, then we're gonna get caught up in the moment and we'll lose track of what we need to do for that week,” Grant details.
“I actually think that’s the most important thing to do on The Block, not look what other people are doing,” Courtney agrees. “You’ve seen it in past seasons and you can see in this season where there's some houses that have influences from other houses or other designs and in the end, it's just going to look mixed. Whereas I think it’s really important to keep it all very cohesive.”

Currently, Courtney and Grant’s biggest competitors appear to be newlyweds Kristian and Mimi after they won the first two challenges back-to-back. However, engaged couple Jesse and Paige only finished in second place to Courtney and Grant by half a point this week so it will be a very tight race at the next room reveal on Sunday.
