Whether you love them or hate them, it’s hard to deny that ‘villains’ are often the most entertaining part of reality TV. Sure, Kristy and Brett stirred up plenty of controversy on last year’s season of The Block when they “sabotaged” other houses and shared “conspiracy theories” about their co-stars, but they also sparked conversations, boosted ratings, and became the favourites among fans who could laugh at their sassy one-liners and savage gameplay.

It was reported earlier this year that season 20 couple Kristian and Mimi were set to be the next ‘villains’ on the renovation reality show, with an insider telling Yahoo Lifestyle that the South Australian newlyweds would be even more “divisive to viewers” than Kristy and Brett. The production source claimed: “The feeling is that we have bought some serious dynamite with these two and we are just waiting for an explosion.”

While Kristian and Mimi have indeed been divisive this season, with fans left outraged after the electrician forged Foreman Dan’s signature in a never-before-seen ‘cheating scandal’ this week, the pair have now shut down reports that they are ‘villains’.

“The description of villain is like how you'd see in Disney movies, like an evil person that’s cruel,” Mimi tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “I’m just not that type of person in real life, or in any life, and neither is Kristian.”

Kristian admits he “had a laugh” and “brushed it off” when he saw reports that he and his wife were tipped to be the ‘villains’, however, Mimi says she was “absolutely shocked”.

“It made me question myself and it made me go, ‘Oh wait, is this true?’. It made me doubt myself,” she details, before sharing that she ultimately decided not to change anything about her behaviour on-camera.

“My biggest thing is authenticity, and I was like that from start to finish. I loved everyone so much as well, all the other contestants, so it didn't change anything.”

Although some reality TV contestants might feel anxious watching themselves on TV and seeing how they’ve been ‘edited’, Kristian and Mimi share they’ve been enjoying the experience so far.

“It’s so weird, because the thing is, you know what your experience was but you don't know what they'll include. And then we watch it and it's like, ‘Oh my god, did we really say that?’,” Mimi remarks. “But I enjoy watching us, I think we have banter.”

“That's sort of how we are in our everyday life,” Kristian adds. “We try not to take life too seriously and we're always keen to have a laugh or keen to have a joke, and the way that they're portraying it is, so far, pretty much how we are in our everyday life.”

The couple also reveal that The Block was their honeymoon after tying the knot three months before filming began, and the experience put their relationship to the test.

“It really was a test. Kristian was doing things that I've never seen him do before, and I’m sure I was behaving in ways because it's a weird place,” Mimi says. “You’re sleep-deprived, I’m driving bloody hours, Kristian’s being asked questions in all different directions, and you kind of learn a lot about each other.

“You're trying to work on your relationship whilst you're doing this crazy renovation show whilst cameras are in your face, so everyone has arguments. But I found that when we finished the show we were like, ‘Oh my god, I'm so proud of us’. Like, how did we do that? We finished a room every week, we finished a house in three months, and we came out of it stronger, but we needed to come out of it to have perspective. Because when you’re in it, you’re not in the real world.”
