The Block viewers argue over controversial bathroom win: 'Revolting'
Courtney and Grant’s main ensuite bathroom left fans divided during Sunday night's episode.
They’ve been wowing the judges all season long with their unique ‘Moderterranean’ design style, but The Block fans weren’t too impressed by the reveal of Courtney and Grant’s main ensuite bathroom during Sunday night’s episode. The Sydney-based married couple spiced up their signature neutral palette with an array of different textures, including travertine checkerboard tiles and a marble niche and benchtop, and finished in first place with a score of 28 points.
The judges’ jaws dropped when they walked into Courtney and Grant’s bathroom and they each praised the couple for their sense of style. Darren Palmer raved about the colour palette and said it was “very Phillip Island appropriate”, and Shaynna Blaze said the room was the perfect mix of classy, trendy and sexy.

What is 'Moderterranean'?
Courtney and Grant tell Yahoo Lifestyle that they went onto The Block intending to create a ‘Modern Mediterranean’ home in Phillip Island not only because it’s a style that doesn’t date, but it’s also a unique take on the traditional coastal theme.
“It's a very similar interior style to that Mediterranean design, which is natural materials, very warm tones and textures like travertine and sandstone. And then in terms of finishes and shapes, not really any hard edges, curves but not too many arches, and I guess a modern twist,” Courtney explains. “We’ve added a bit more of a luxe feel because it can be a bit more of a rustic look than Mediterranean style. So I guess tying them both together.”
While they certainly didn’t invent the design style, Courtney believes she may have coined the term ‘Moderterranean’ by accident.
“To be honest, the Moderterranean term, I think I was fumbling my words in week one and it turned into Moderterranean. So that wasn't on purpose, that was kind of just a fluke!” she laughs.
Interior designer weighs in on Courtney and Grant's style
The judges may have loved Courtney and Grant’s implementation of the ‘Moderterranean’ style in their main ensuite, however, not everyone is a fan of their finished product this week.
Interior designer Chris Carroll, director of TLC Interiors, tells Yahoo Lifestyle that the couple needed to “edit a few features” as the room became “very visually overstimulating”.
“They've done a reasonable job interpreting it, but the main issue - especially this week - is that there are too many competing elements fighting for your attention,” he explains.
“What makes the Modern Mediterranean style so pleasing is that it's an easy, unfussy, and calm aesthetic. Their ensuite bathroom this week had a ton of bells and whistles. A beautiful idea like the checkered layout of the wall tiles was overshadowed by the brass shower trim, the stone niche and vanity top, the coloured basins, and the decorative vanity handles.
“It all got very visually overstimulating, which is against the very nature of the modern Mediterranean vibe. You need to choose one star and let the other elements be the supporting players. Jesse and Paige did a better job in creating a calming oasis this week.”
Fans divided over bathroom design: 'Too much going on'
A majority of viewers appear to agree with Chris on social media that Courtney and Grant’s room was “too mismatched”, with one person declaring: “I would never buy a house with that bathroom.”
“Loved the bathroom but I thought the marble vanity top and shower niche just didn’t match the rest of the room,” another added.
“I don't like the marble in Bathroom 2. It looks old-fashioned and too busy to me,” a third said, while someone else replied, “I don’t like all the different textures, to me that doesn’t go together at all!”.
“I thought there was WAY too much going on. All the different patterns of tiles clashed,” a different user remarked, followed by another who shared, “A lot to unpack in that house. Far too much going on, felt exhausted after looking at it”.
“Too many different finishes. Looks busy and confused,” one viewer commented, with others describing the bathroom as “tacky”, “terrible” and “revolting”.
However, plenty of people said Courtney and Grant’s bathroom was their favourite and they deserved to win.
“I really liked everything about Grant and Courtney’s room! So glad they won at last!” a fan declared.

“Moderterranean. I'm sold. What a wonderful eclectic yet blended ensuite bathroom,” another shared, followed by someone else who said, “I love the marble and it's beautifully done with the marble round the edges instead of metal”.
“I thought it was spectacular so beautiful, just shows in the end it’s in the eye of the beholder,” a different user remarked.
