Logies 2024: Surprising star tipped to win Gold Logie thanks to 'network bias'

One of this year’s nominees reportedly has an ‘unfair advantage’ at the 64th Logie Awards.

The nominations for the 64th Logie Awards were announced on Sunday evening with seven popular Australian TV personalities up for the coveted Gold Logie. Former winners Asher Keddie and Sonia Kruger each received a nod alongside previous nominees Julia Morris and Andy Lee and first-timers Tony Armstrong, Larry Emdur and Robert Irwin - who is the youngest male to ever receive a nomination at just 20 years old.

While voting is now open ahead of the ceremony on August 18, industry insiders are already tipping one star to take home the award due to a “network bias”. A source tells Yahoo Lifestyle that Sonia Kruger could win for a second year in a row simply because the Logies airs on Channel Seven and she has an “unfair advantage” as one of the network’s most prominent stars.

“There was so much exposure on Channel Seven for Sonia in the lead-up to the 2023 Logie Awards and that really helped them get that win across the line,” the insider tells us.

“The fact that Sonia hosted the official red carpet coverage prior to the awards while the voting lines were still open was certainly perceived to be a considerable pledge to her connecting with audiences in a way that none of the other nominees on opposing networks were afforded.”

The source adds that The Morning Show host Larry Emdur also has a good chance of winning the award because “the network bias is too hard to ignore”.

“Sonia and Larry will both be heavily promoted on Seven’s morning shows which are the top-rated in the country, so you can see how that will also affect the outcome,” they point out.

It’s often been rumoured that the network that has the broadcasting rights to the Logies is linked to the outcome of the prestigious Gold Logie. This is particularly evident in the last two years as Hamish Blake won the award in 2022 while Channel Nine aired the show before Channel Seven took over in 2023 and he lost to Sonia Kruger.

However, during the period that Channel Nine held the telecast rights from 1996 to 2022 the network only won a total of five times compared to Seven who won 12 times, Ten who won seven times and ABC who won once.

Not only does Channel Seven have the power to make their Gold Logie nominees the official hosts of the Logies red carpet, but they also control the ticket allocation for the event.

Our insider tells us there will be significantly fewer people from Channel Nine and Network 10 at this year’s award show due to the number of streaming platforms that received nominations and the size of The Star Sydney.

MAFS participants hoping to get the call up to attend will be disappointed as their allocation has been halved from last year,” the source shares.

“It’s also rumoured that The Block will only have two houses representing last year’s season, which is a massive shame as those two shows were both at the top of the ratings with massive numbers. The people who front these shows get left behind and that is unfair.”
