Kmart shopper's warning over $3 item that's ten times the price elsewhere: 'Devastated'

The cheap accessory may look cute, but it doesn't seem to work as intended.

The aisles at Kmart are full of things you never knew you needed. From can toppers to extendable colanders and lint catchers, the budget retailer has cemented itself as the place to go when you want to grab three things that were on your shopping list and 20 things that weren't.

The latest item that has people talking is the very cute (and very cheap) $3 crab spoon holder that just dropped in store. Yes, I can hear you collectively asking what the heck a crab spoon holder is so let's break it down for you.

According to Kmart's website, the spoon holder is supposed to keep spoons and utensils neatly in place while protecting your countertops from spills. You can sit the little critter on the edge of your pot and prop the lid against its body to release steam and prevent pots from boiling over, and use the claws to hold your cooking utensils and keep your benchtop clean. The crab also twists so that the spoon drips back into the pot instead of onto your bench.

Nevertheless, it would seem that the product has left one shopper a little...crabby.

"I bought this as a novelty as in my head I’m like that will get too hot!!," the customer shared in a popular Facebook group. Was only $3. Yep you guessed it, it got hot, now sitting on a plant pot where it and fingers are safe. So warning don’t buy for intended use!"

The post was met with plenty of comments from people expressing

"Oh no I'm devastated," one person replied. "I've got one on the way and I want it for the intended use. Did he at least keep the spoon cool? Cos I could work with that."

"I honestly wouldn’t leave it on my pot," the original poster responded. "The spoon was also warm and also you have to get it at the right proportions or it falls out. I’ll stick to my spoon rest."

"I would expect it to get very hot, just like silicone cake trays etc do," another group member added.

"I expected it to get hot but not that hot and took ages to cool," the author replied. "He can live happily in my plant."

Hilariously, plenty of people were undeterred and still said they wanted the silicone accessory - just not for their kitchens.

"I don't care, he's so cute, I need one or two asap," one person wrote.

"I want one just as decor around the house hahaha," another laughed.

"I want to get many. One for each plant pot and one to actually use once," a third added.

"I still want the ouchy crab lol," another Kmart shopper wrote.

"I was thinking the same thing," someone replied. Too cute. Probably still suitable for things that aren’t boiling on the stove/produce less upwards heat, or I’ll think of another use for it!"

The crab spoon holder (which really does just make you want to start belting out 'Under the Sea') appears to be a dupe of a far more expensive version of the gadget found on other sites.

The cute crustacean retails for $30 elsewhere making the Kmart version a great bargain, despite it's drawbacks.

Other people online have raved about the utensil, praising not only how adorable it is but how well it has worked for them.

One question that came up in relation to the gadget several times on TikTok was whether or not the silicone crabs could also be used to hold a mobile phone.

"Can he hold my phone so I can look at a recipe?," several people asked.

Sadly, it does not seem like this Sebastian lookalike has the strength to complete such a task.

"Unfortunately, no," was the reply. "He maxes out on weight with a utensil to hold. A phone is too heavy."
