Kmart shoppers divided over popular $3.50 camping item: 'These are hopeless'

Kmart's can toppers have been a popular item, but many don't think they're as great as we've been led to believe.

Kmart has become a go-to for most (if not all) your camping needs in recent years, and one item has become a particular favourite for those who enjoy drinking soft drinks or not-so-soft drinks from a can. The $3.50 can toppers turn your favourite can into a bottle, making them a much better option for travelling.

You might be thinking, "What's the big deal? Why do we need to turn a can into a bottle?"

Well, cans are often a go-to, thanks to the fact they come in large multi-packs and aluminium is pretty much infinitely recyclable – pretty cool right? In fact, approximately 75 per cent of aluminium ever produced is still in use today, according to the Australian Aluminium Council.

And, while it might not be a big deal when you're enjoying a can of Coca-Cola at home, turning a can into a bottle means you can protect your drinks from spills and insects, which become a bigger problem when you're camping. They're also great when you're driving, especially with kids on longer trips.

The toppers are BPA-free, fit most 375ml size cans, washable and reusable and come in four colours: yellow, orange, purple and blue. You can find them in the camping section of your local Kmart.

However, it seems like there's a bit of division online about whether these can toppers are any good.

Taking to Facebook, one shopper questioned, "I recently brought these can toppers to take camping but they just fall right off am I doing something wrong? Has anybody else got these and they work?"

"You need to push them on hard so they click in place," one person responded. "Feels like they’re going to break but they won’t."

"These are hopeless," another said. "You push them on quite hard and they fit well but whatever you do, don’t turn the can up and down with the lid on when carrying it. They are watertight but the pressure of the soft drink makes them shoot off and across the room!"

"Couldn’t get them to work either," a third added.

"Tried pushing them on really hard but they just come right off, they don’t click at all," the original poster shared.

"I found them too tight to get on properly," someone else added. "Great idea but hard to get in properly."

Others agreed that "they can be tricky", with others suggesting to look at other versions of the can toppers.

Some, on the other hand, loved them, with one woman writing, "My husband uses these and has never had one pop off. He opens the lid when he clicks them on, not sure if that helps, I’ve personally never used them."

She added, "We even had a can on the roof of our car fall off whilst driving and it didn’t pop off."

"Love these. It's hard to get them on sometimes but they are great," another wrote.

"My husband and I use them all the time and they're great for travelling," one TikTok user said.

"They fit on Coke cans, love them," someone else said.

When one person questioned why you wouldn't just buy bottles, one wise Coca-Cola enthusiast responded, "Can Coke tastes better."
