2024 was the year for Brat Summer, being demure, holding space for Wicked and, according to new data, a humble root vegetable. Amazon has announced this year’s ‘Alexa’s Most Asked Questions’ revealing that while many customers relied on their virtual assistant on how to cook an egg, the most asked-for recipe was for baked sweet potato.

That’s right, more Aussies were asking Alexa how to cook an item you can find for around $2 at your local Woolies, Coles or Aldi, more than any other dish. The other recipes in the top five most requested include double chocolate mousse cake, sweet and sour lemon slice, pear and blue cheese tart, and funfetti pancakes.

If you were wondering what the actual recipe is for baked sweet potato, Alexa says to place the sweet potatoes on a baking sheet, pierce them all over with a fork and bake them at 220℃ for 45 to 50 minutes before cutting them open with a knife and smearing them with butter - pretty simple!

It’s no surprise so many people were searching for ways to cook the vegetable as the purple sweet potato was named Vegetable of the Year for 2024 in January.

Sweet potatoes are also said to have many health benefits and may support immune function, digestive health, heart health and eye health. They are low in fat and high in fibre and are an excellent source of vitamins, minerals and plant compounds, including beta-carotene.

There are also plenty of sweet potato recipes available on TikTok, from sweet potato bake and sweet potato casserole to loaded baked sweet potatoes and melting sweet potatoes with brown sugar crumble.

Content creator @nicoandlouise recently went viral with their easy roasted sweet potato recipe which involves seasoning cubed chunks with paprika, garlic powder, salt and pepper and baking for 30 to 45 minutes until tender and caramelised.

They also made a dressing with tahini, water, lemon juice, garlic and salt, which they drizzled on the sweet potatoes and topped with shaved almonds, chopped parsley and lemon juice.

Social media users commented that the side dish was “so delicious”, “10/10” and a “huge hit” with their family.

Outside of recipes, the most asked-about celebrity in Australia was Taylor Swift, followed by Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Elon Musk and Eminem.

The Fortnight hitmaker also topped the list of celebrities Aussies were asking about their height and age, while her 2014 hit Shake It Off was the most played song and The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology was the most played album via Alexa and Amazon Music.

People also loved to ask Alexa to ‘do something silly’ or ‘insult me’, with data revealing Aussies are four times more likely to ask Alexa to insult them than ask to be complimented.
