Amidst all the perks of travelling in a caravan, one of the biggest downsides to life on the road is finding a spot to hang your wet clothes, towels and other gear. While some campers are equipped with awning clotheslines, many people have had to seek out other options to dry their clothes.

One social media user recently posted in a popular Facebook group to share how they managed to install a portable clothesline to the back of their caravan. The man said he secured the clothesline to the jockey wheel using clamps.

Although he didn’t specify the clamp he used, shoppers can purchase RapidMesh galvanised steel temporary fence clamps for $5 from Bunnings.

Other caravan owners quickly took to the comments to praise the “clever idea”, describing it as “smart”, “awesome” and “bloody brilliant".

“Genius! Just sent a photo to my husband. He has a job now haha,” one person wrote, while another added, “Better than the stand ones falling in the dirt all the time. Not everyone pegs theirs down, we salvaged so much washing for neighbours when we were travelling full-time”.

Some people also shared advice as to how to improve the ‘hack’, suggesting they turn the top part of the clothesline upside down.

“It won’t catch as much wind and will be more stable. It is also much easier to hang clothes on,” they said. “There should be two tightening screws you can undo, then tap it off the post, turn it up the other way and tighten.”

Not everyone loved the hack, however, with one person commenting: “The lack of symmetry does my head in lol I would want to put a bar across the middle and then put it centred.”

“I like this idea… but the front of our van is always dusty and my washing will be filthy,” another remarked, while someone else agreed, “Same here!”.

A handful of social media users also shared the different ways they’ve managed to secure a portable clothesline to their caravan.

“I just use tent pegs over the legs so I can move it into the sun,” one person wrote, followed by another who said, “We use our grip sport bike rack for towels”.

“I got short tie-down straps from Bunnings and just strap it to the drawbar. Works really well,” a third remarked.

Content creator Brent Orwell (@brentorwellofficial) posted a video on TikTok sharing his “caravan hack” to install a clothesline on the awning for just $24.50 from Bunnings

“Drill a 6mm hole, get an eye bolt with a locknut on the inside and a turnbuckle with some swages and 10m of galvanised rope. On the other end you’ve got your eye bolt with a deshackle and swage,” he detailed.

“Make sure it clears your windows and of course your door so you can open it.”
