With People’s ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ for 2024 set to be announced on Wednesday, Sunrise viewers have called for Olympian-turned-TV host Matt ‘Shirvo’ Shirvington to take out the title. The annual feature, which celebrates its 40th issue this year, bestows a famous male celebrity with the honour of being named the most handsome man in the world.

So far only three Australian celebrities have been given the title, including Chris Hemsworth in 2014, Hugh Jackman in 2008, and inaugural winner Mel Gibson in 1985. However, Sunrise’s Natalie Barr has called for her co-host Shirvo to be awarded the honour in 2024.

The breakfast TV duo were speaking about who could appear on the upcoming feature during Tuesday morning’s broadcast when Nat pitched for Shirvo to be added to the running.

“I’m saying someone, a blast from the past, let’s take a look at this picture from way back,” Nat said before a throwback photo of Shirvo wearing just his underwear and sitting on top of a horse popped up on screen.

The black-and-white image was taken in the early 2000s as part of the former Olympic sprinter’s modelling campaign with Jockey underwear.

“Who’s that?” Shirvo remarked. “Wowee, look at that. More baby oil than Diddy.”

“Can you re-enact it?” Nat asked Shirvo as she exploded in fits of laughter. “Can you just take us back to that day, Shirv?”

“That actually shocked me that day, I don’t even want to talk about what happened,” Shirvo replied. “I got bucked off that horse during that photoshoot.”

Shirvo then told his family to “divert their eyes” if they happened to be watching the show, while Nat encouraged him to “be proud”.

Many viewers seemed to agree that Matt deserved the honour of being named ‘Sexiest Man Alive’, with one person describing him as “the whole package”.

“I honestly think Shirvo should be on the cover this year! He’s gorgeous, intelligent and funny!” they added.

“Shirvo was and still is very sexy,” someone else wrote. “Why did Nat laugh at that photo, it was gorgeous. He was young, hot, sexy and extremely good-looking, so what was there to laugh at? And like a good wine, he has got better with age, and he's only 46!”

Others weren’t so positive, however, as one viewer simply commented: “I don’t think so.”

Glen Powell is currently the favourite to receive the title of ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ for 2024, with betting analysis website Sportsbook Review calling him the “clear frontrunner”.

The 36-year-old, whose fame reached new heights over the past 12 months following the release of Anyone but You, Hit Man and Twisters, has already been crowned ‘Sexiest Summer Action Star’ by People’s readers.
