Sandra Bullock Details 'Deep Concern' for Fans in Urgent Warning
Sanda Bullock is asking her fans to be on alert for impostors, issuing a warning that there may be some bad actors pretending to be her.
The Miss Congeniality star went further, expressing “deep concern” both for the safety of her family and for “the innocent people being taken advantage of.”
In a Feb. 3 statement to People, Bullock said that she was “helping law enforcement handle this matter,” before explaining that she does “not participate in any form of social media.”
The actress continued, explaining that “any accounts pretending to be me or anyone associated with me are fake accounts and have been created for financial gain or to exploit people around me.”
Bullock’s sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, shared a similar statement on Instagram on Feb. 2, writing “I spend multiple times a day reporting fakes, dealing with weird & scary emails to my BUSINESS and HOME from men who believe that, through one of these many fake 'me's, they have a relationship with my sister,” next to a screenshot of the fake accounts.
Bullock-Prado then explained that those people believe that they are in communication with the Oscar winner “through private messages and off app sites” and in some cases have given “THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS” to accounts that they believe are connected to Bullock.
This follows a slew of similar warnings issued by other celebrities, including country star Reba McEntire.
In November, McEntire begged fans to be careful on social media, suggesting that scammers were impersonating her online and reaching out to followers to ask for payment, usually via electronic transfers or gift cards.
“I and my team will NEVER correspond with you from a direct message or cell phone number asking you for money in order to meet me,” she wrote on social media on Nov. 17.
Last month, Brad Pitt issued a similar message after a woman was scammed out of $850,000 by someone who was posing as the actor.
A representative for Pitt released a statement that said, “it's awful that scammers take advantage of fans' strong connection with celebrities, but this is an important reminder to not respond to unsolicited online outreach, especially from actors who have no social media presence.”
