Interior designer calls out major change on The Block: 'Seen before'
TLC Interiors director Chris Carroll has shared his honest thoughts on this year’s season.
The Block has been considered a go-to destination for viewers to discover emerging trends in the world of interior design since it first launched on TV in 2003. However, as the reality show has shifted to focus more heavily on the drama in recent seasons, this no longer appears to be the case.
Chris Carroll, director of TLC Interiors, tells Yahoo Lifestyle that design lovers have stopped hoping to see the ‘next big thing’ on the renovation series as the contestants are often “a little behind”.

“Unfortunately, The Block is no longer the place to go for emerging trends,” he shares. “We're so saturated with amazing interior design on websites and social media now that watching The Block always feels like the teams are a little behind on what's current in the design landscape.
“There's definitely nothing new being presented that we as design lovers haven't seen before elsewhere. This might change come kitchen and living room week, but so far the consensus is that the rooms have all been a little ho-hum this year.”
Chris adds that apart from Courtney and Grant who have continued their ‘Moderterranean’ theming throughout their home, none of the other teams have had a consistent style this season.
“Despite what we're being told, I wouldn't say there are strong, cohesive styles emerging four reveals into the season,” he says. “The most consistent team is Courtney and Grant in terms of look and feel of the spaces, but the others are still finding their feet.”
What is 'Moderterranean'?
Courtney and Grant tell Yahoo Lifestyle that they went onto The Block intending to create a ‘Modern Mediterranean’ home in Phillip Island not only because it’s a style that doesn’t date, but it’s also a unique take on the traditional coastal theme.
“It's a very similar interior style to that Mediterranean design, which is natural materials, very warm tones and textures like travertine and sandstone. And then in terms of finishes and shapes, not really any hard edges, curves but not too many arches, and I guess a modern twist,” Courtney explains. “We’ve added a bit more of a luxe feel because it can be a bit more of a rustic look than Mediterranean style. So I guess tying them both together.”

While they certainly didn’t invent the design style, Courtney believes she may have coined the term ‘Moderterranean’ by accident.
“To be honest, the Moderterranean term, I think I was fumbling my words in week one and it turned into Moderterranean. So that wasn't on purpose, that was kind of just a fluke!” she laughs.
