Alan Cumming teases 'really good' “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion” sequel plot: 'I am so excited'

"It was just so clever and witty. It's one of these films that some people are obsessed with," the "Traitors" host says of the original film.

Alan Cumming isn't sure why he was cast in Romy and Michele's High School Reunion — but he's very ready to shoot the sequel.

"I don’t know why they asked me." the Traitors host tells Entertainment Weekly of starring as unpopular-geek-turned-successful-businessman Sandy Frink in the 1997 Lisa Kudrow-Mira Sorvino comedy. "It was the first film I ever made in Hollywood, and it was one of the first things I ever read when I came here to sort of whore myself around," he explains, speaking to EW for our 2024 LGBTQ+ Pride cover story. "It was just so clever and witty. It's one of these films that some people are obsessed with."

Cumming was recently in Atlanta for an event and attended a screening of the film "and it was feverish. It was almost culty," he says. "It's great to be a part of something like that, that people are so passionate about."

But it's not just the fans who maintain a passion for the Y2K cult classic, Cumming also can't wait to see the character revived in the upcoming sequel: "I think what's great about the sequel to Romy and Michele is just going back to something that is so beloved and having a relationship with these characters," he says. "I actually know what the story is, and it's really good. So I'm excited. I'm so excited to go back to it."

Speculation that a new Romy and Michele adventure was on the way began after Kudrow and Sorvino appeared together at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards (with post-its, of course), and a few months later both stars told various outlets that something was in the works with original film screenwriter Robin Schiff, but nothing was official.

When asked last year by the A.V. Club if he'd return for another film, Cumming told the outlet, "I would love to do a sequel. I have to say, I think the fact that there hasn't been is a really big example of the misogyny of Hollywood. You know, I think that the things I've heard about why, sort of like, 'Oh, you know, they're getting on a bit, older women, blah blah blah.' Terrible.... It's such a popular film. If it was two men in that — you know, two men, successful film — we would've had six by now."

There is no word yet on whether other original Romy and Michele stars — which include Janeane Garofalo, Julia Campbell, Camryn Manheim, Elaine Hendrix, and Justin Theroux — will also return.
