With summer now properly underway (heatwave, anyone?) and Christmas holidays within sniffing distance, scores of Aussies will be hitting the beach for some downtime. Of course, no beach trip or pool day is complete without some serious sun safety, which means covering every bare inch of skin in a good SPF and seeking shade where possible.

As any beachgoer will tell you, though, one aspect of being sun-smart is just downright annoying, especially when you are solo. I am, of course, talking about applying sunscreen to your back - the necessary summer task that makes you wish you had the skills of a contortionist.

One clever chap, however, has figured out a nifty hack for this most treacherous of duties, showing off his innovation at Freshwater Beach on Sydney's Northern Beaches.

Captured on the Creatures of Manly Instagram account, the man simply takes out a paint roller and uses it to apply sunscreen to his back. No double joints or Cirque du Soleil style moves required.

The post was quickly flooded with praise for this chap and his outside-the-box thinking.

"Would win Shark Tank honestly," said another.

"I'm off to Bunnings.. that is genius," yet another impressed person added.

If you're keen to give it a whirl yourself, you should also head to Bunnings, where you can snap up a foam paint roller set for just $5.90.

For the sceptics, this hack also comes dermatologist-approved, with Dr Anna Karp sharing a video on TikTok recommending that people try it out.

She captions the video, "When you need to get sunscreen on your back, a 2-inch paint roller helps! "

"This is genius, I can never apply my acne medication on my back because I can't reach," one of her followers replied.

Now, because sun safety does not stop with SPF, while you're at your local Bunnings grabbing a paint roller, you can also snag a beach umbrella, too. One shopper did just that, calling the Marquee 2m Beach Umbrella with Tassels"the best $35 I've ever spent" on TikTok.

"Yesss, it's so good," one person replied. "I've used mine at the beach heaps!"

"Just convinced me to make the order," another person said.

"Great for beach and outdoor areas when monitored," one customer wrote on the Bunnings website. "We take this to the beach every few weeks. Includes a sand weight bag, have owned for 6 months now and no rips or breaks so is withstanding beach gusts well. Nice neutral colour. Also fits in an umbrella stand at home and put it up beside my son's sandpit when playing outside."
