Aldi shoppers flock to buy $13 summer essential that's normally $35: 'Stock up'

Aldi shoppers have been racing to the supermarket chain to pick up a cheap summer goodie, with the retailer selling a much-needed Aussie staple for $12.99. So if your trotters need a new pair of thongs for a beach summer, Aldi has the very popular Havaianas stocked and ready to go for those who don't want to do things the old-fashioned way — barefoot, obviously. Is it even an Aussie summer if you don't see a whole bunch of hardcore Aussies walking around the beach, parks, and even supermarkets with no shoes on?

If that thought kinda disgusts you, then Aldi may be the place to go so you can slap a soft pair of Havaianas onto your feet and protect them from bindis.

The triumphant comeback of the Havaianas

You may have thought Havvies have never really gone out of style (especially in 'Straya, mate) but TikTok users are labelling the iconic thongs as the next "shoe trend". While they never really went anywhere, the triumphant comeback of the Havaianas in 2024 could be put down to the fact they were put to the side as Birkenstocks started to take over people's feet from Bondi through to Busselton in the last few years.

Forget just the beach — Gen Z are ready to rock these bad boys now with everything from baggy jeans to a slim maxi skirt, teamed with an oversize shirt or top.

Considering the general price of a pair of Havvies can set you back nearly $50, it's safe to say the $13 steal at Aldi is enticing a lot of people to stock up on the summer fashion staple.

Aldi shoppers snapping up cheap $13 Havaianas

The thongs usually retail anywhere between $35-$50 on the Havaianas site, or for around $25-$28 at other retailers like Big W or CityBeach, so the $12.99 price tag has many shoppers happy, with some touting them the "softest pair of thongs" you'll ever wear and others tagging their friends and urging them to "stock up".

While some shared success with picking up a pair — "Got some at Tuggerah today and they scanned at $9.99," one happy shopper posted — it looks like while NSW stores are currently stocked, other states may be a bit delayed, with some unable to find the thongs (or flip flops if you will) yet, with people in the Aldi Mums Facebook group saying they were unable to find the shoes in Queensland or SA stores yet.

Yahoo Lifestyle has contacted Aldi for comment.

But some Aldi shoppers have warned against discounted product

Some thong-lovers weren't convinced that the cheap pair of Havvies were as good as the kind you find in surf shops that retail for a higher price.

"I personally feel a difference when wearing these and the ones from Big W as opposed to the ones in the surf shops etc," one person said. "The Aldi and Big W ones aren’t as comfy and not as flexible."

"I found the plug always coming out of the Aldi Havaianas," someone else complained. "Purchased several pairs."
