I Tried the New Viral Way to Make a Bagel and My Mornings Are Forever Changed

I’m your typical early morning gym guy. And I traditionally follow up my workouts with a big breakfast. Typically, that looks like a meats, protein shakes and lot of eggs. But given the rate at which I go through eggs coupled with the sky-high egg prices, I've become open to trying new ways of working in protein into my diet.

That's how I stumbled across a high protein recipe that has been taking over TikTok. This recipe shared on @laus_healthy_life claims to add 10 grams of protein to each homemade bagel. It's also touted as being so easy to make,  you may not ever need to buy a store-bought bagel again. It seemed way to good to be true, so I had to give it go for myself. Here's how it went.

Ingredients for High Protein Air Fryer Bagel

This list is simple and short, making it perfect for a quick snack or grab and go breakfast. For one serving of one bagel, you’ll need all-purpose flour, Greek yogurt, an egg for egg wash, Himalayan pink salt and a little baking powder if your flour is non-rising.

How to Make the High Protein Air Fryer Bagel

The process is as simple as the list of ingredients. Mix the flour, baking powder and yogurt together until you form a wet dough. Roll the dough together to shape a ball and make a hole through the center to form the shape of a bagel. Coat the dough with the egg wash and add your desired toppings (cinnamon sugar, everything bagel seasoning, etc.). Bake the dough in the air fryer at 375° for 15 minutes, until the bagel is fully cooked and golden brown.

What I Thought of the High Protein Air Fryer Bagel

Without the added salt, I have no doubt the bagel would have been extremely bland. I suppose that is what one would expect however from a high protein bagel. But I did appreciate the added nutritional value the Greek yogurt provided. I’m sometimes reluctant to eat bagels but the added protein in this rendition more than makes up for it. I would definitely try these again as a quick grab-and-go breakfast after my morning workouts.

Because I was eating my bagel for breakfast, I only added butter and jelly. When I make this again next week, I will probably opt for peanut butter or even use the bagel to make a mean bacon, egg and cheese sandwich.

My Biggest Tip for Making the High Protein Air Fryer Bagel

  1. Make em' big. If I were you, I would form the batter in larger rings, so the bagel grows large as it bakes.

  2. Quadruple the recipe to make four bagels at a time. That way, you have breakfast prepped for the next few days. One is fun but four is more!
