The Block's Maddy and Charlotte react to 'disappointing' move from co-stars: 'Sad'
EXCLUSIVE: The sisters open up about feeling 'lonely' while filming the reality show.
There’s nothing worse than being the last person to arrive at an event when everyone else has already formed their cliques, established inside jokes and created lifetime bonds. Well, this is exactly what’s happened to The Block’s newest team, Maddy and Charlotte.
The Sydney-based sisters officially joined the reality show during Tuesday night’s episode after Paige and Jesse made the heartbreaking decision to quit. They were given just 24 hours' notice before getting on a plane, flying to Melbourne, and taking over House 1 for the remainder of the competition.
While Maddy and Charlotte were understandably nervous to enter a new environment with pre-existing friendships, their co-stars certainly didn’t ease their worries. Not only did Kristian take it upon himself to ‘steal’ House 1’s plasterers and leave them high and dry, but Kylie also admitted on camera that she won’t be nice to them.

Speaking with Yahoo Lifestyle about their whirlwind first week on The Block, Maddy and Charlotte admit it was “disappointing” receiving such a frosty reception from their new co-stars.
“Kylie was not a fan from the get-go. We don't really know why she had that reaction,” Maddy remarks. “I mean, that was disappointing and that was a bit sad, and obviously it's hard for us coming into an environment where it’s like, we're not intruders. We’ve been asked to come here and we've dropped everything from our lives to be here and pick up the pieces, so that was hard. But there were some people who were friendly and showed us around, and that was nice.”
The sisters also reveal that much of their time on The Block was “quite a lonely experience” because they entered the competition in week five.
“Our experience was different to others and it was at times harder, and for a long time, we really only had each other,” Maddy continues. “It was quite a lonely experience. We really relied on each other and we could really only trust each other.”
Maddy and Charlotte reveal why they were 'sad' to join mid-season
While the Sydneysiders were “so grateful” for the opportunity to appear on The Block in any capacity, especially having grown up watching the renovation series, they confess that they would’ve loved to have been a part of the cast from the beginning of the season.
“Obviously there are things where you have to grieve the fact that you don't get that four weeks experience with the other contestants, you don't get to have all those fun, exciting things like everyone else did in the lead-up,” Maddy details.
“That is sad and that is something that we dreamed of all our lives growing up watching The Block that we would have that experience. But at the same time, we were just grateful to be given an opportunity and we were like, let’s just run with that.
“It really is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity however we get there, and it was one of those things that we'd always applied because we wanted to stretch ourselves and to grow and see what we could do. And so I think when you're given that opportunity, we were grateful.”
Why weren't they originally cast in this season?
Maddy and Charlotte, who also applied for last year’s season of the reality show, share that they were never “properly told” why they weren’t originally cast on season 20. However, during the casting process, they were made aware that their “biggest obstacle” would be differentiating themselves from last year’s sister team Eliza and Liberty.
“I know that they had two sisters the year before and we were told in the first interview we ever had that that would be our biggest obstacle,” Maddy says.

“Obviously, in casting they need to differentiate the cast, so we were always told from the beginning that that was something that we would have to overcome. But we weren’t really told the details, we didn’t have time for that!”
