'Sweet Magnolias' Star Heather Headley Explains Show's 'Homage' to 'Ghost' in Season 4 (Exclusive)

SPOILER ALERT! This article contains spoilers for Season 4 of Sweet Magnolias.

Helen Decatur and Erik Whitley channeled Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze in Season 4 of Sweet Magnolias.

Episode 8 saw Dion Johnstone's character, Erik, reveal his pottery passion to Helen and sit behind her at the pottery wheel, bringing to mind Moore and Swayze's famous pottery scene from the 1990 movie Ghost.

"I think they wanted to do an homage to the film," Heather Headley, who plays Helen, tells Parade in an exclusive interview. "And when I saw it, I was like, 'You've got to be kidding me, we're going to do this?' And they were like, 'Yeah, we're going to do it.' I thought it was very sweet and very sexy and really cool."

"Now I understand from all those years that I was watching Ghost with Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore, and I was like, '[Gasps] I want that to happen to me,'" she adds. "And now it did."

Headley noted that when she's working with Dion, "there's great respect there."

"Respect for Dion and his respect for me and respect for our spouses," The Lion King on Broadway alum says. "And so it never gets crazy or gets to that spot, but it was fun to do it."

The scene, no surprise, got a little messy and took a few takes. Headley shares, "I had multiple skirts and shirts, and so did he, because it gets messy, and for continuity, you've got to make sure, if you're doing takes over and over again that all the dirt is in the right spot."

The final result "came out so much better" than Headley thought it would. The Sweet Magnolias star also thinks the scene is "quite representative of maybe who" Helen and Erik are and what they're going through. "That they've had this kind of messy, you know, past," Headley explains, "and now something beautiful has come out of it."
