She’s been a judge on The Block since 2012, but it turns out Shaynna Blaze almost had a very different role on the reality show. The interior design expert and TV personality has revealed that she once considered applying to be a contestant on the renovation competition before she was cast in her current position.

During a recent appearance on the Something To Talk About podcast, Shaynna admitted that it was “weird” when she was asked to join The Block as a judge in season five because she was already a fan of the show.

The Block was something that we all knew and loved and it had come to Melbourne, it was in Richmond, and it was like, ‘Wow’,” she remarked. “And in my mind, I'm thinking, 'Oh, maybe I could go on The Block as a contestant’. That was just in the back of my mind.

“I haven't really said that much before, but that was sort of like, ‘Oh, maybe I could!’. But I thought, ‘I'm on Selling Houses Australia, I can’t’.”

The mother-of-two went on to share that the process of being cast as a judge on The Block was “possibly one of the most bizarre moments” in her TV career. She said she had a meeting with the show’s co-creator and executive producer Julian Cress and his wife, marketing manager Sarah Armstrong, to discuss the opportunity and quickly realised they were pitching to her rather than the other way around.

“They proceeded to tell me how great it would be to have a female judge on The Block and I'm sitting there going, ‘Oh, they're selling it to me, I'm not selling it to them,” she recalled. “That was possibly one of the most bizarre moments in my TV career, the fact that they had come to tell me that they wanted me to be on the show, not for me to tell them and beg for one of these amazing opportunities.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Shaynna finally responded to rumours that she will be leaving The Block next season. New Idea reported in June that Shaynna was jumping ship to co-host Channel Seven’s renovation series Dream Home alongside Chris Brown in 2025, however, she has now asserted that she’s not going anywhere.

“No, I love [The Block],” she said. “It is a family. I'm so lucky with two shows, Selling Houses and The Block, that we were a family the whole time. We supported each other through all the hardships of what you do on these shows - they’re not easy. And I absolutely love it.”

This comes shortly after Neale Whitaker, who recently stepped back from his role as a judge on The Block after 17 seasons, told Yahoo Lifestyle that he’s open to returning to a full-time position in the future.

“Who knows what the future holds,” he shared. “I'm in a very nice stage in my career where projects come along. Things sort of come along into my life and it's lovely.

“I'm quite philosophical these days. I kind of know what my priorities in life are, I know what I love doing, and that's kind of my attitude towards life. So it's kind of que sera, sera, what will be, will be. I'm open-minded about what the future holds.”
