From pizza toppings to snack choices, there are plenty of food opinions that are guaranteed to spark debate amongst a group of friends. Even a disagreement on something as simple as which direction you cut a sandwich or where you store condiments can make you question everything you thought you knew about someone.

Australian icon Robert Irwin has now weighed in on some of the biggest food disputes in the country and shared where he stands - so let’s see if you agree.

While it was once voted Australia’s least-favourite pizza topping, the public’s opinion on pineapple seems to be turning - with Robert himself admitting he’s a fan.

“Are you trying to get me cancelled here?” he laughs when he’s first asked about the tropical fruit.

“Oh my gosh. This is controversial. Okay, you heard it here first. In my opinion, pineapple on pizza is a yes. That is a huge yes. I love pineapple on a pizza, it just makes it so much better.”

When it comes to his favourite form of peanut butter, the I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! host says he prefers crunchy over smooth.

“Smooth is a no-go, like, no,” he asserts. “I want to know it's peanut butter. If it's got no crunch… I want to know there’s a peanut in there, you know?”

It’s a controversial topic across Australia - especially in Queensland - but Robert has an unexpected response when asked if he prefers to store chocolate in the fridge or the pantry.

“I'm actually going to surprise you here, I keep chocolate in the pantry,” he shares. “If there's a heatwave coming you’ve definitely got to move it to the fridge, but I’m a firm believer that it can stay in the pantry.

“I don't like cold chocolate. I don't want to break my teeth on a piece of chocolate, I love it room temp. But if it’s during summer you go from that fine line from chocolate being chocolate to soup. You have to find that balance.”

It’s been argued for decades whether jam or cream should be spread first on a scone, however, Robert has a unique approach.

“This is what I do. I break it in half and then I'll go jam on one side, cream on the other, and make a sandwich. Mic drop,” he says. “I'm a culinary visionary.”

Perhaps there’s no Australian food debate greater than Chicken vs Cheese-flavoured Twisties, which is why Robert has partnered with the snack brand to help settle it once and for all.

The wildlife conservationist advocates that Chicken Twisties should be voted the country’s favourite flavour, while musician G-Flip has put their support behind the Cheese flavour.

“In my opinion, there is no debate and Chicken Twisties just wins automatically - not that I'm biased or anything being captain of a Team Chicken,” he remarks.

“Team Chicken I think represents me very well and I'm excited to fight for Team Chicken because it's kind of the underdog. You hear Twisties and you just think, ‘Oh yeah, Cheese Twisties’, but there's so much more to it.

“Chicken Twisties have the green and gold packet, it’s iconic Australian, it's the underdog, it’s the one in my opinion. So I am firmly Team Chicken Twisties. It is subjective, but I don't think you can beat the taste of a Chicken Twistie.”
