Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell's new film sparks concern: 'Worst pair'
You’re Cordially Invited is set to be released on January 30.
Fans have been left divided following the trailer release for Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon’s upcoming comedy You’re Cordially Invited. The film, set to be released by Prime Video on January 30, sees the actors play family members of brides-to-be who discover the weddings have been double booked.
The trailer teases that the pair will be locked in a rivalry and go head to head to ensure their special weekends continue as planned. The film is directed by Nicholas Stoller, best known for the comedy films Forgetting Sarah Marshall, The Five-Year Engagement and Bad Neighbours, and also features Celia Weston, Fortune Feimster, and Australian actress Geraldine Viswanathan.
Fans concerned over major detail
Despite starring two of the biggest names in Hollywood, social media users have expressed concern over the new film as multiple media outlets have described it as a ‘romantic comedy’. In classic rom-com fashion, this would suggest Reese and Will’s characters will have an ‘enemies-to-lovers’ storyline - which some fans aren’t too keen on.
“I hope they don't fall in love in the end,” one person commented, while another added, “Not so sure about this”.

“The genre is dying. They have freaking Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell in a rom-com,” a third shared, followed by someone else who said, “What we are witnessing is the tail end of two popular actors run. This looks neither rom or com, it looks bom”.
“Jesus, this is the worst pair/couple for a rom-com I’ve ever seen. And I like even the dumbest rom-coms,” a different user remarked.
While Reese Witherspoon has starred in several romantic comedies throughout her career, with the most recent being the 2023 film Your Place or Mine alongside Ashton Kutcher, Will Ferrell has only appeared in a handful of films in the genre.
He’s acted opposite Rachel McAdams in Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, Zooey Deschanel in Elf, and Reese’s Big Little Lies co-star Nicole Kidman in Bewitched.
Is this the return of the classic rom-com?
There have been plenty of people, however, that have expressed excitement over the “amazing duo” working together and even gone so far as to predict You’re Cordially Invited will signal the return of the 2000s-style rom-com.
“Wow this is exciting, Hollywood is back with rom-coms,” a fan declared, with another writing, “Reese Witherspoon & Will Ferrell in a new movie together?! The 2000s are BACK!”.
“An early 2000s movie coming out in 2025, screw it. Sign me up!” someone else shared, while another user said, “Oh yeah baby the mid-2000s-style rom-coms are back”.
