Controversial Love Actually moment the writer 'begged' director Richard Curtis to remove
It turns out that one of the most-hated Love Actually storylines wasn't one that the writer liked either.
It's finally Love Actually season, which means it's time to relive some of our favourite (and least-favourite) storylines of the Christmas film. And it seems the most-hated Love Actually storyline isn't one that the writer wanted included in the final script.
That is, of course, the plot that sees Alan Rickman's character Harry cheating on his wife Karen (Emma Thompson) and buying his secretary Mia a necklace while giving Karen a CD. How could he?!
The film was directed by Richard Curtis and was written by Emma Freud – fun fact: the pair are married! Despite their relationship, it doesn't mean they agree on everything in the film.
During a Q&A about the film on X almost ten years ago, Emma revealed she had "begged" Richard to remove the Harry cheating on Karen storyline.

A fan asked, "Did anyone ask if Harry ACTUALLY had an affair or was just tempted to? Alan Rickman villains [are] usually loveable, but not this one!"
Emma responded, "DEFINITELY had an affair. I begged Richard just to make it a flirtation, but no. The whole way."

One X user responded, "Nooooooo! My heart breaks, I really thought it was just flirting, when did that happen? Poor Karen."
"Life ruined," another said.
"Oh that makes me so sad," a third added. "I always hoped that the stupid git had never had the chance before Emma called him on it."

Emma also revealed that Rowan Atkinson's character, who works in the department store where Harry buys the necklace and spends an agonisingly long amount of time carefully gift-wrapping the piece of jewellery, did so on purpose!
"Originally Rowan’s character over-wrapped the gift on purpose to stop Alan Rickman being able to buy the necklace. Because he was an angel," she said.
Love Actually fans spot heartbreaking hidden detail
It comes after TikToker @the_koo_koo_nest_ pointed out that one of the most heartbreaking moments from the scene where Karen realises Harry has given the necklace (which she found in his jacket pocket a few days earlier) to someone else.
Fans may remember that the necklace had a small ruby in it, and Karen actually wore red earrings, red lipstick, and a red cardigan to match the ruby.
"The way she matched her earrings to the necklace," the TikToker wrote. "The way she holds it together for the kids. The way she pats down the bed. I stand with Emma Thompson."
Many others, like me, had never noticed this part of the movie, with one fan writing, "But how have I never noticed the earrings."
