Queen Mary of Denmark Pops in a Statement Coat for Christmas Service
Queen Mary of Denmark put a dramatic twist on the winter trench coat while out for Christmas Eve.
The royal wore a cashmere overcoat by Max Mara in a vibrant orange hue to attend Christmas Eve service at Aarhus Cathedral in Aarhus, Denmark. Queen Mary paired the belted topper with a grey outfit consisting of a beaded ribbed knit turtleneck from Prada, Gianvito Rossi‘s Hansen boots, and Chloé‘s scalloped patchwork leather bag with a chain strap.

She was photographed alongside her daughter, Princess Isabella, who wore a green tweed Prada coat that Queen Mary has stepped out in before. (Queen Mary paired the coat with cropped black slacks and lime pointed-toe heels back in 2020 for the launch of World Hour 2020 at Copenhagen City Hall.) Princess Isabella styled it with a white turtleneck, gold hoop earrings, and the Helen clutch by Aiayu.
This isn’t the first time that Queen Mary has worn Max Mara’s orange coat. The royal wore it in October, during a visit to Holstebro in celebration of the city’s 750th anniversary, pairing it with a burgundy headband, matching gloves, and matching Aquazzura Gainsbourg 85 Boots. She also wore a burgundy floral dress from Saloni and diamond-paved earrings by Sophie Bille Brahe.
Burgundy, along with merlot, mahogany, and bordeaux, has been trending heavily in recent months after popping up on the runway for fall 2024, where the red shades were represented with bags from Chanel, Ferragamo, Dries Van Noten, and Louis Vuitton. Labels such as Bottega Veneta, Ferragamo, Victoria Beckham, and Issey Miyake also put forth interpretations of red and all of its variants on the runway for fall 2024. Not to mention, red was one of the breakout trends at the recent Deadline’s 2024 Contenders Film: Los Angeles and at this year’s MTV VMAs.
Burgundy has also been a hit with royals as of late. Back in April, Queen Maxima of the Netherlands stepped out in a burgundy power suit by Claes Iversen to visit the Schoenenkwartier museum in Waalwijk, Netherlands. Earlier this month Kate Middleton also suited up in burgundy, opting for a bespoke burgundy coat courtesy of Alexander McQueen, a burgundy felt beret courtesy of Sahar Millinery, burgundy boots by Gianvito Rossi, and matching gloves by Cornelia James. Middleton paired her look with a burgundy Chanel handbag that has become a favorite for her. Not to mention, at a Christmas lighting event in late November, Princess Charlene of Monaco completed her look with a burgundy manicure.
Queen Mary, who joined the royal family when she married King Frederik X in 2004, has increasingly embraced pops of color over the years. Below, see Queen Mary of Denmark’s style through the years.
