Warning: Spoilers for No Good Deed ahead!

The new series No Good Deed is blowing up on Netflix, telling the story of three families trying to buy the same home. The dark comedy stars a bunch of big names, including Lisa Kudrow and Ray Romano, and dives into several different storylines.

Starting in episode three, we learn that Dennis (O-T Fagbenle) has really high blood pressure. Dennis’ dad died of a condition called sarcoidosis when he was 39, and Dennis is now 38, which raises some concerns.

In the next episode, we learn that Dennis has some symptoms that can indicate sarcoidosis. He's convinced he has it—and that he's dying.

This potential diagnosis leads to a big secret being uncovered in the ending of No Good Deed. But is the disease real?

What is sarcoidosis?

Sarcoidosis is a condition where groups of cells in the immune system form small lumps called granulomas, which can appear in any organ in the body, per the U.S. National Library of Medicine.

It can eventually lead to permanent scarring of organs. Symptoms of the condition can vary, depending on organs that are impacted, but they can include fatigue, unexplained weight loss, fever, depression, and night sweats.

The plotline around sarcoidosis has raised a lot of questions about the rare condition. Here’s what you need to know.

How do you diagnose sarcoidosis?

Sarcoidosis is usually diagnosed with a combination of a physical exam, imaging like a chest X-ray, and a biopsy of granulomas, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Doctors may also do additional tests to rule out other illnesses.

Is sarcoidosis treatable?

There is no cure for sarcoidosis but the goal of treatment is to put someone in remission. Meaning, they have no symptoms of the condition.

Sarcoidosis will go away on its own for some people, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Others may be given medications to try to lower inflammation, treat an overactive immune system, treat joint pain, and treat skin problems.

People with complications of sarcoidosis may need surgery, oxygen therapy, or a pacemaker.

Can you live a long life with sarcoidosis?

Yes, you can live a long life with sarcoidosis. In fact, most people with the condition are expected to live as long as someone without it, per the Cleveland Clinic. But sarcoidosis can be fatal in a small number of people—1% to 5%.

What foods are better for sarcoidosis?

There’s not a sarcoidosis diet, per se, but the medications prescribed to treat the condition can be hard on your body, according to NYU Langone Health.

As a result, your doctor may suggest that you try to have a balanced diet that includes dairy products, lean meats and other protein sources, vegetables, fruit, and whole grains, per NYU Langone Health. It also may be helpful to limit refined foods, sugar, white pasta, and foods that are high in fat.

Does Denis have sarcoidosis on the show?

In No Good Deed, Dennis gets a follow-up CT scan. Even though the show doesn't reveal the results, viewers make the assumption that he wasn't ultimately diagnosed with the disease.

That's because the only reason this disease was a concern in the first place was because Dennis' father had died from it. However, it's revealed that Dennis' had a different biological father. So he couldn't possibly have inherited sarcoidosis from the man.
