Most shocking celebrity photoshop fails of 2020

Ah, 2020. A year of immense change and upheaval, of pandemics, protests and a historic US presidential election.

Amid all the chaos, however, it was comforting to know that some things remain constant such as a celebrity’s urge to tweak and touch-up their photos before sharing them online.

Some stars are skilled at subtly cinching in a waist here or smoothing skin there, so much so that their digital nips and tucks go mostly unnoticed. Others aren’t and the results of their failed photoshop jobs — warped backgrounds, ‘fake’-looking faces and missing limbs to name a few — are forever burned into our memories.

Here are just a handful of the most shocking celeb editing fails of 2020.

Kim’s bikini blunder

Kim Kardashian copped quite a bit of flack for flying her friends and family to a private island for her 40th birthday amid the pandemic, but that wasn’t the only part of the trip that raised eyebrows.

Eagle-eyed fans were quick to point out a hilarious photoshop fail in one of the star’s numerous bikini snaps that also featured her sisters, Khloe and Kourtney.

In the photo, the trio are all posing for the camera with their arms around each other — except that a section of Kim’s forearm appears to have disappeared which some saw as proof that she may have slipped up on the editing tools.

Khloe who?

Kim’s younger sister, Khloe Kardashian, also appears to be a repeat image editor.

Earlier in the year, a fan called out the 36-year-old’s liberal use of photoshop by tweeting one of her Instagram selfies alongside a screenshot from her hit E! reality show, Keeping up with the Kardashians.

In both images, Khloe is wearing the same white lingerie-style top and butterfly necklace but in the selfie, her skin is noticeably smoother and brighter and the mole to the right of her nose seems to have vanished.

The right half of her gold chain necklace is also missing, prompting fans to suspect that the pic had been edited using an app such as FaceTune.

“While angles do play a role, it is clear that Khloe’s face has been edited [and] reshaped to the point where plenty of people did not recognise it was her,” one Twitter user wrote.

Then, in September, the reality star baffled her fans yet again with new pics in which she looked ‘so different’.

One fan wrote, “What did you do to your face?? You look so different.”

Another added, “I didn't recognise her,” and someone else agreed, writing, “You've completely changed,” with a crying emoji.

The mum-of-one, however, doesn’t have a problem wading into the comments section to defend her appearance from time to time.

One fan asked, “Why do you look so different in all your photos?” to which Khloe quipped, “My weekly face transplant clearly.”

Blake’s funny feet

It was a case of ‘spot the difference’ when A-lister couple Blake Lively and Ryan Reynold took to their respective Instagram accounts to share the same voting day happy snap.

In her pic, the Gossip Girl star is seen standing next to her Canadian-born husband while wearing pink jeans, a grey plaid coat and strappy black heels. Over on Ryan’s account, however, Blake was completely shoeless and teetering on her tippy toes.

Turns out, the mum-of-two had added in the footwear as an afterthought and fans were quick to catch on; “It’s the drawn on heels for me,” one wrote.

Blake took it all in her stride, jokingly calling herself a ‘barefoot iPhone doodler with vast experience.’

Ally up in arms

Back in May, Today show viewers were left scratching their heads over a bizarre promotional image of newly-installed hosts Allison Langdon and Karl Stefanovic.

The pair both appeared to have been poorly edited with Karl’s face ‘floating’ eerily upon his neck. Ally’s arm — or lack thereof — has to take the cake for one of the worst editing jobs of the year, however.

The presenter’s right upper arm is mysteriously missing from her shirt sleeve, though her wrist and hand makes makes a surprise reappearance in the pocket of her pink pants.

Shared to Twitter by The Kyle and Jackie O Show, a close up of the missing arm prompted a response from Ally herself, who was more than happy to get in on the joke.

“You good @AllisonLangdon?” the cheeky snap was captioned.

“It’s been a tough week!!” the host responded.

Dancing without legs

Former Bachelorette Angie Kent made her Dancing With the Stars debut in 2020 but it wasn’t her samba or foxtrot that caught peoples’ eye.

In a promo image for the show, the reality TV darling is seen getting a piggyback by dance partner Julian Caillon — a good thing too because her right leg looked to be missing.

“Where’s ya leg????” one of Angie’s fans asked on Instagram, while another wondered, “Did it get photoshopped out?”.

The ex-Gogglebox star weighed in, saying it was simply ‘an action shot.’

Tammy’s carpet capers

Australia’s own Instagram queen Tammy Hembrow has been forced to deny altering her steamy swimsuit pics before uploading them on several occasions.

One photo of the influencer posing in a tiny white bikini in particular set tongues wagging as it appeared to contain a telltale sign of photoshop use — a warped or wonky-looking background.

In the background of the snap the edge of the Queenslander’s living room rug seems to be distorted hinting that her famously pert derrière may have been digitally enhanced.

If that were the case, it’d be a direct contradiction of the photo’s caption which claimed Tammy’s was a “natural booty” honed via her own exercise program, Tammy Fit.

“The carpet’s bent,” one fan pointed out in the comments. “So much for [a] natural look.”

The accusation, however, was swiftly shut down by the influencer and a few hundred followers.

“Sis go look at literally ANY photo with that carpet in it,” Tammy responded. “It bends up at the corner lol. Trust me ya girl does not need to photoshop.”

“The carpet lifts at that corner in every pic...literally every single one,” one fan wrote, backing her up.

Royal blunder

Even royalty isn’t immune to a photoshop fail, it seems, with Prince Philip’s official 99th birthday photo attracting some unwanted attention. Both the Duke of Edinburgh and his wife, the Queen, are seen posing on the grounds of Windsor Castle — or were they?

A few suspicious details in the snap — such as a strange outline around the monarch’s hands — had fans wondering if the pair had been lifted from another image and edited into the background.

“That dark shadow around the hand makes it look like it's been cut from another photo,” one wrote on Twitter.

Others agreed that bewteen HRH’s hands and the oddly over-exposed background something didn’t quite add up.

“It seems photoshopped,” remarked one while another jokingly asked, “Do you need help with the photoshop guys?”
