Every reality TV show needs to have a villain and for this year’s season of My Kitchen Rules, it was Janey and Maddie. The mother-and-daughter duo and self-proclaimed ‘Kitchen Queens’ have been criticised by fans for how they’ve acted throughout the competition, with many accusing them of being “arrogant”, “nasty” and “manipulative”.

Fellow competitors Caz and Fergus, who sent Janey and Maddie home during Sunday night’s nail-biting semi-final, have now spoken out about their co-stars’ controversial ‘edit’ and revealed what they were really like during filming. The mother-and-son pair tells Yahoo Lifestyle that despite how they’ve been portrayed on TV, they have nothing but nice things to say about Janey and Maddie.

“Look, I really feel for both of them, because I think a lot of what's been said about them [on social media] is completely unfair and misconstrued,” Caz shares. “We didn't have any beef with Janey and Maddie at all, they're lovely, completely generous people.

“I just think it's obviously hard to read some of that stuff about people you've spent a lot of time with, and I really feel for both of them that they’ve had a lot of negativity. It's not pleasant.”

Fergus adds that he’s glad Janey and Maddie were given the chance to compete in the semi-final and showcase their cooking skills because there was “no more room” for drama.

“All that focus was on what the show’s all about, which is cooking food,” he remarks. “I think last night was great because it was all about the food, and it was two really good competitors going against each other.”

While the reality show allowed Caz and Fergus to establish “a lot of beauty friendships” with their co-stars, it also strengthened their relationship as mother and son.

“Not that we were in a bad spot before the show, but I think it’s done us a world of good spending that solid time together,” Fergus details. “We had the best time and regardless of what happens in Tuesday night’s grand finale, I think we're going to remember this forever.

“Whatever the result is, we’re going to look back with fondness from doing something so wild and so crazy like reality TV. We did it, so I’m super, super proud of us for that.”

Caz admits it would be “mind-blowing” to win not only the $100,000 grand prize money but the “prestige” of being the MKR champions for 2024.

“That's a lovely title that stays with you forever, and if I ever have grandkids, we’ll share all that excitement and all those memories,” she says. “But whichever way it goes, we're pretty proud of ourselves and happy about the whole experience.”

MKR grand final week continues 7:30pm tonight on Channel Seven and 7plus
