MKR star reveals major casting secret ahead of grand final: 'Holding me back'
EXCLUSIVE: Caz and Fergus open up about how different this year’s season could have been.
They’ve emerged as fan favourites on My Kitchen Rules, but it turns out Caz and Fergus almost didn’t compete together on this year’s season of the reality show. The mother-and-son duo tell Yahoo Lifestyle that while it was an “absolute treat” getting to spend so much time with one another during filming, Caz had initially applied to compete with someone else.
“Mum's been trying to get on this show forever, she’s had a few cracks at it,” Fergus reveals, to which Caz adds, “That sounds desperate! Not forever, I’ve applied a couple of times”.
The pair, who advanced to Tuesday night’s grand finale after going head to head with ‘villains’ Janey and Maddie, explain that Caz previously wanted to appear on the show with her sister.
“I’ll be honest with you, I applied two times before with my sister. She’s an incredible cook and we auditioned and all the rest of it, but at the end of the day, she was holding me back,” she says with a laugh. “Obviously we needed Fergus’ youth and his spunk and larrikin behaviour.”

When asked how her sister feels about ultimately not appearing on MKR, Caz admits she’s completely fine with it.
“You know what, I think now that she's got a bit more of an insight into how the program runs, I think it's a blessing that she wasn't on it because she may not have come across all that well,” she shares, hinting that her sister may have been portrayed as the ‘villain’.
“Yeah, long hours, big days, I think she kind of saw it as a bit of a blessing that we did it and not her,” Fergus remarks. “So she was very stoked that we're on it and glad that one of us got to go on it.”
Caz and Fergus weigh in on their 'edit'
Speaking about their own portrayal on the reality show, Caz and Fergus admit they’re quite pleased with their ‘edit’ and how they’ve come across on TV.
“It’s a massive undertaking to edit all of those hours of footage down to an hour episode and obviously things are going to get left out, but Fergus and I are pretty happy with the way that we've come across,” Caz details.
“I think it's a really authentic and genuine portrayal of the two of us. We're pretty happy with everything, really.”

Fergus adds that the one thing he wishes viewers saw more of this season was his German co-stars, Robert and Andrea.
“Obviously they left in our second round [of Instant Restaurants], but they were beautiful people. Everyone’s beautiful, they were just hilarious,” he says. “I think we just needed a little bit more of Robert and Andrea.
“I think there was a lot of things that didn't get shown, but a lot of it was just more of the same thing - cooking and chatting.”
MKR grand final week continues 7:30pm tonight on Channel Seven and 7plus
