MAFS' Olivia details strict rules for contestants while filming: 'Cabin fever'

Over the years there have been plenty of rumours about what it’s really like behind the scenes of Married At First Sight, with fans often questioning whether the brides and grooms are able to leave their apartment building or meet up off-camera.

Now, one of this year’s participants has opened up about the filming process and shared juicy details about what viewers don’t get to see on TV.

Olivia Frazer, who is ‘married’ to Jackson Lonie, spoke openly with Yahoo Lifestyle about the strict rules set in place for the couples in the experiment.

“So this year was especially isolating because for the first month of filming we weren't allowed out of our rooms without a chaperone,” she revealed, adding that she ended up going “stir crazy”.

The 27-year-old went on to say that the isolating experience gave her plenty of time to overthink conversations and replay certain moments in her mind.

“There was nothing but that dinner party to think about, the commitment ceremony to think about, Holly’s eye-rolling to think about,” she detailed.

“There wasn’t much else going on, it was a bit of cabin fever. That definitely is a thing behind the scenes for the rest of the season, we’re all stuck in our rooms.”

While the cast lived together in the same apartment building for the duration of the experiment, Olivia explained that there were extreme protocols implemented to avoid off-camera conversations.

“There was security in the hallways, there was an in-house producer,” she described. “Eventually they were like, ‘Oh, you can go for a walk by yourself and that's it’.”

However, she confessed that there were a couple of incidents during production when contestants would “sneak into each other's room and have a drink”.

“There was a bit of that sort of naughty stuff going on that we definitely paid for later,” she added with a laugh.

Speaking about her relationship with Jackson and their on-screen portrayal so far, Olivia also shared that there are been plenty of moments between the pair that haven’t aired on TV.

“It's such a shame that the audience doesn't get to see how funny Jackson really is,” she admitted.

“It's lovely that we’re ‘the loved up couple’ and ‘the strong couple’ and all that sort of stuff, but they’re missing so much fun as well. We’re not as boring as we look!”

Although things currently appear to be smooth sailing for the newlyweds on the show, Olivia hinted that viewers can expect to see plenty more drama among the cast this season.

“I think there's a lot of tears, a lot of tantrums, a lot of love to come,” she teased.

Married At First Sight airs at 7pm on Sunday and 7:30pm on Monday to Wednesday on Channel Nine and 9Now.
