MAFS' Jack finally explains why he always said 'good job' to Tori

EXCLUSIVE: Jack responds to comments that he and Tori were 'faking' their relationship.

From his controversial behaviour to his unique facial hair, there have been plenty of moments throughout this year’s season of Married At First Sight where Jack Dunkley has left fans completely and utterly baffled.

Perhaps one of the most confusing moments was when Jack was filmed telling his partner Tori Adams behind closed doors on the couples retreat, “Well done, good job”, which led viewers to believe they were ‘acting’ for the camera.

Others described Jack’s comment, which he repeated during Monday night’s reunion episode, as “creepy” and “controlling”.

Speaking with Yahoo Lifestyle, the 34-year-old explained that his vocabulary comes from being a personal trainer where he has to encourage people every day.

“I was not aware I used to use that language with Tori on the show, but that is just who I am,” he shared.

“I say that to my clients at the gym every single day no matter what they're talking about, it doesn’t even have to be about the gym. It's almost like, ‘You’ve done a good job, well done, hang in there’. That's just my language. That’s just me encouraging someone no matter what it is like, ‘You’re doing a good job’.”

Jack went on to say that he told Tori she was doing a ‘good job’ at the reunion because of how she handled herself in front of the experts.

“We just got hammered with this video and in my head I was just thinking, ‘Babe, hang in there, don’t break, stay strong, you’re doing a good job because this is brutal by any stretch of the imagination’,” he added. “I kissed her on the shoulder and it was just encouragement.”

Why Jack and Tori stayed in the experiment for so long

In response to speculation from fans that he and Tori were ‘faking’ their relationship on-screen and staying in the experiment for airtime, Jack admitted that he doesn’t blame them.

“We’re only human at the end of the day. We go into this experiment and you can see the pressures that are put upon Tori and myself throughout the whole journey. Who in their right mind would want to stay and be a part of that? Let’s be honest, it's horrible,” he remarked.

“Watching our journey back, I get it. Like, who would stick around and put up with that? Why wouldn't we leave? Why don't we just say, ‘We’re happy we found each other, we’re getting out of here’? But that wasn't us. I would’ve felt like we were quitting if we had done that.”

Jack added that one of the biggest motivators for staying in the experiment was that he and Tori were hoping they would have a “redemption arc”.

“At the end of the day, we wanted to prove to the experts and the audience that we are good people, we do make a good match, we’re just very resilient and obviously we're copping a bit of a hiding right now,” he said.

“We’ve heard of the redemption arcs and we were fighting for that, we wanted everyone to see the real us. We never got it, however, we have the rest of our lives now to get that redemption arc and if people care or they don’t - we really don't mind - they can see the real us.”
