How the Late Linda Lavin Will Be Written Out of the Upcoming Hulu Comedy Mid-Century Modern

Art sometimes very sadly imitates life.

In an Instagram post accompanied by BTS photos of series co-leads Nathan Lane, Matt Bomer and Nathan Lee Graham, and others, all clearly dressed for a memorial service, Mutchnick wrote, “This Week at ‘Mid Century Modern’ we filmed an episode I never thought we’d have to write — ‘Here’s to You, Mrs Schneiderman.’

“Saying goodbye to the character of Sybil was painful,” Mutchnick added. “Saying goodbye to Linda Lavin was heartbreaking.”

Lavin died unexpectedly on Dec. 29, due to complications from recently discovered lung cancer. The Emmy-nominated actress and two-time Golden Globe winner was 87.

Mid-Century Modern — which hails from Mutchnick, fellow Will & Grace creator David Kohan and executive producer Ryan Murphy — is loosely inspired by The Golden Girls and “follows three best friends — gay gentlemen of a certain age — who, after an unexpected death, decide to spend their golden years living together in Palm Springs where the wealthiest one lives with his mother,” according to the official logline. “As a chosen family, they prove that no matter how hard things get, there’s always someone around to remind you it would be better if you got your neck done.”

Lavin had taped seven of the sitcom’s 10 episodes prior to her passing.

“Working with Linda was one of the highlights of our careers,” Kohan, Mutchnick and pilot director/EP Jimmy Burrows said in a statement after Lavin’s passing. “She was a magnificent actress, singer, musician, and a heat seeking missile with a joke. But more significantly, she was a beautiful soul. Deep, joyful, generous and loving. She made our days better. The entire staff and crew will miss her beyond measure. We are better for having known her.”
