Weddings are expensive, so it makes sense that brides are often tempted to seek out cheap dresses from fast fashion websites. We’ve all seen some epic online shopping fails, when the dress received was completely different from the advertised pictures, but what happens when you commission a stunning gown only to be sorely disappointed?

One woman took to Facebook to share the shocking story of her cousin’s wedding dress saga, where the final result was truly hideous. In fact, it was so horrendous, that it prompted a slew of content creators to make videos about the ordeal to bring attention to the bride's plight.

“I need everyone to tag the Shaderoom and help my cousin recoup her money for her wedding dress,” they wrote. “She waited three months to have this dress custom made and the designer kept taking measurements and delivered this at the last minute.”

The dress used for inspiration was a stunning white dress with a sweetheart neckline and off-the-shoulder sleeves. There was a thigh-high slit on one side, and the dress was covered with delicate lace details.

The dress she received was a strapless monstrosity, with two brown padded cups sitting at the top, and a cheap lace pattern laid over the top of the dress. There were three white rosettes tacked on and it didn’t look a thing like the original design.

“[The designer] refused to refund the money for the dress and stated that funds were spent on material for this piece of mess. Everyone knows how stressful and expensive a wedding can be and my cousin is one of the most selfless people, so this was very disheartening to see her taken advantage of,” her cousin added.

After the drama was shared on TikTok by creator Jessica Bailey Hassan, the video about the bride racked up 63,000 views with many in disbelief.

“I was imagining the worst, but somehow reality was even worse,” one person said.

“The way I screamed literally out loud,” another added.

“My jaw dropped,” a third declared.

“Nothing, I repeat, nothing could have prepared me for how bad this was,” another remarked while another said, "Call the police and a math teacher. What did they do with the measurements??"

Although the lead-up to the big day was stressful for the bride, her cousin added an update on Facebook, saying that the wedding was “beautiful”. She managed to find an alternative dress that looked similar to the inspiration photo.

This comes after Melbourne bride Tina Yong purchased some cheap wedding dresses from online retailer Wish.

The Sexy Suspender Dress Mesh Openwork Perspective Princess Dress looked gorgeous in the retailer’s photos, but when the vlogger tried it on, she realised there was one huge problem: it was completely see-through.

“If my mum saw me wearing this down the aisle, she would be mortified,” she told her followers. “This is very X-rated, this looks nothing like the photo. In the photo she looks really elegant and you can’t see anything. This is like a curtain.”

Tina said that she “might as well be naked walking down the aisle”, as you could see her “bra and undies” through the fabric.

The other dresses she tried from Wish weren’t all see-through, but she noted the fabric seemed “cheap”. Another dress – which cost $17.99 – disappointed Tina after glitter covered her floor and clung to her skin.

Some of her followers suggested that the see-through dress would work with a slip underneath, with many saying you get what you pay for.

“Buyers should adjust the expectations when getting items at these price points… obviously a $20 dress is not going to arrive looking like it’s a $200 one,” a fan wrote.

“That’s why it’s called ‘Wish’, you wish it was different,” another joked.

“I am waiting on my dress now but I had it custom made online. Hopefully it’s no nightmare like these!” a third exclaimed.
