Kmart shopper discovers bizarre detail in $10 speaker: 'Flabbergasted'

A woman has gone viral on TikTok after pointing out a bizarre feature of the $10 Bluetooth Speaker she purchased from Kmart. While Aussies have become accustomed to electronic devices using American or British accents, the shopper was shocked to learn that her new gadget had an Australian accent when announcing prompts.

“I was not expecting this,” the woman said in the video. “I just went to Kmart and had a whole shopping spree and one of the things that I bought was this $10 speaker because it was on clearance.

“This is the first time ever that I have heard a speaker sound Australian.”

She then turned on the speaker, which is currently marked down from $15, and demonstrated what it sounds like when saying commands like ‘power on’, ‘Bluetooth mode’ and ‘power off’.

“Was NOT expecting the speaker to sound like an Australian teenager,” she wrote in the caption.

Fans react to 'insane' feature

The video has since racked up over 400,000 views and received plenty of comments from people who agreed the detail is a “jump scare”.

“Omg that's crazy,” one person wrote, while another added, “I'm flabbergasted”.

“It's weird but it's honestly about time,” a third remarked, followed by someone else who said, “I love how it sounds like a regular person too like it could actually be me or a mate”.

“Now I'm freaking out that most speakers just sound like normal people to British and American people? That's insane,” a different user remarked.

Meanwhile, many people were convinced that the voice was “100% a Kmart employee”, with someone writing: “I work at Kmart and that sounds like that lady we hear during those training video. Wouldn’t be surprised.”

“The voice sounds like the online training you need to do as a Kmart employee,” another agreed, while a different follower said, “It’s the person that does the ads and pre-recorded announcements”.

One user even joked that the speaker was “voiced by a Kmart customer service clerk with her lunch break held hostage”.
