Julia Morris calls out Lynne McGranger's dig at Robert Irwin: 'Not appropriate'

EXCLUSIVE: The I’m A Celebrity host says Lynne ‘knows better’ than to take a swipe at Robert on social media.

Not only are Julia Morris and Robert Irwin both Gold Logie-nominated presenters in 2024, but they’re also best friends after co-hosting this year’s season of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!. And just like any close friendship, Julia has stepped in to defend her pal after Home and Away star Lynne McGranger recently took a savage swipe at Robert’s nomination.

Following the nominations announcement last month, Lynne publicly voiced her support for her Channel Seven colleague and The Morning Show host Larry Emdur to win the prestigious award. The veteran actress took to the comments section of Larry’s post - a screenshot of his friend’s text saying he’ll be voting for Robert over him - and shared her unfiltered thoughts about the 20-year-old Wildlife Warrior.

“I'm sorry but ol'mate Irwin has been on telly for a bloody minute!! No disrespect intended,” she commented alongside the hashtag ‘Lazforgold’.

“Are you starting an internet feud Lynne?” Larry jokingly responded, to which Lynne wrote back, “Could be honey”.

Julia, who has yet to win the Gold Logie despite being nominated every year since 2022, tells Yahoo Lifestyle that she understands Lynne’s perspective in supporting her colleague but doesn’t think it’s fair for her to tear Robert down while doing so.

“I understand that people aren't exposed to people from other networks very often. So I think that Lynne's love for Larry - everyone looks at Larry and they're like, ‘Larry deserves it, he’s been around forever’. Well, my answer to that is, everybody deserves it on that list,” she shares.

“So I totally get the sentiment of Lynne where you want to protect and fiercely fight for the person that you adore, but it's not appropriate to call out somebody else at someone else's expense. And Lynne knows better than that.

“I just think Lynne knows better than that. Lynne is a fantastic woman and she's been around the industry for a long time, she’s an incredibly talented actress, and I think her passion for wanting Larry to take it is where that comes from.”

Robert also admits to Yahoo Lifestyle that he tries his best to avoid any negativity on social media but he’s grateful for Julia’s support.

“Honestly, literally since the time I was born I've been really trying to fight the good fight, lead with positivity and just really try and remain positive, but also acknowledge mental health and when you're having a bad day and the importance of really surrounding yourself with positivity and the people that lift you up,” he says.

“And for me, my life's mission and my life's goal has been spreading important messages through this industry, and I'll continue to do so till the day I die and hopefully keep that legacy going. So I really appreciate it and together, I think, with Julia and myself, we’ve got a lot of exciting years ahead. World domination’s in our future.”

Robert shares that he feels “very, very honoured” and “over the moon” to be nominated for the Gold Logie alongside Julia, making him the youngest male to ever be nominated for the prestigious award. Kylie Minogue won the Gold Logie when she was just 19 in 1988, and Delta Goodrem was also 19 in 2004 when she was nominated for the same award.

“I never thought in my wildest dream this is where we would be,” he gushes. “This is just the coolest and most surreal experience. But Julia and I just keep talking about how cool it is to be nominated, of course, but to do that with a mate. It’s really, really cool and it doesn't happen very often.”

“It’s super lucky,” Julia adds. “And also, we always think it's just awesome that the show is still on the air. So for the show to be nominated and for both Robert and I to be nominated as presenters, and then to be nominated for the Gold, it's an embarrassment of riches.”

“But let me tell you, our friendship - we’ve already won.”
