Jules and Cam reveal major mistake most MAFS stars make: 'Lost in the wash'

EXCLUSIVE: Jules and Cam reflect on their reality TV experience and open up about their new feel-good series.

If you ask any Married At First Sight participant what their dream outcome of the reality show would be, chances are they’ll probably say they want to be ‘the next Jules and Cam’. Not only are Jules Robinson and Cam Merchant two of the most followed Australian reality stars on Instagram, but they’re also one of the experiment’s biggest success stories after tying the knot in 2019 and welcoming their second child just last month.

Speaking with Yahoo Lifestyle almost six years after they first met on the reality show, the pair reveal that they credit their success both during and after the experiment to something they each did before filming began - which most participants seemingly ignore.

“The reason why we feel it did go so well for us was because we did so much work on ourselves as individuals prior. So the universe was like, ‘Okay, now you're ready for it’,” Cam shares. “Our whole journey we had each other, we were on the same level, and we were able to discuss and support. But even when we were by ourselves, we had that inner strength and that understanding of ourselves. So then when you come out, you come out even stronger.”

“We're forever grateful for our experience,” Jules adds. “It was tough, we both broke into tears in there, but we’re really grateful for such a fun, amazing experience that led to all this.”

Cam asserts that if you don’t do any work on yourself before embarking on an experience as life-changing as MAFS, you can come out of it as “even more of a shell of a person than you might have been going in”.

“If you're going in there with half of an understanding of who you are, what you stand for, who you’re not, you get lost in the wash and you come out thinking, ‘Geez, was that worth it?’. There’s so much to it,” he continues.

In an effort to try and change the lives of people who both have and haven’t appeared on reality TV, Jules and Cam recently launched a brand new series across social media called Renovate Me Please!.

The feel-good content series sees the beloved power couple team up with The Block 2023 winners Steph and Gian Ottavio as they set out on a mission to transform guests from the inside out, starting with recent MAFS participant Tristan Black. The season 11 groom went on MAFS looking for love but quickly admitted that he didn’t love himself - something that Jules and Cam were determined to fix.

“Tristan was such a great person to have as the first guest. He’s such a beautiful human being and he just doesn't see it,” Jules details. “For him to strive forward for what he wants in his life, he's got to feel like he’s worthy of that. And that's the biggest part of manifestation, feeling worthy of what you're asking for.”

Jules describes Renovate Me Please! as a “modern-day, holistic version of Trinny and Susannah” where she acts as the style and makeover queen, Cam serves as the health and wellness coach, and Steph and Gian are the renovation experts.

“You can look amazing on the outside, but if you're not feeling it, then nothing feels right,” she says. “I've kind of been explaining it like, it's not like The Block where it's this huge makeover, it's little pieces of value that every viewer can take that and go, 'You know what? I'm going to try that this morning’ or ‘I'm going to do that little thing’.

“We just want the viewer to take value from it and be like, ‘I could put that in my life’. It's just a little change that makes the big changes.”
