Berlinale Golden Bear Winner Carla Simón Reuniting With MK2 Films for Next Feature, ‘Romería’ (EXCLUSIVE)
MK2 Films (“Anatomy of a Fall”) is reteaming with Carla Simón, the Spanish filmmaker of the Berlinale Golden Bear-winning film “Alcarràs,” on her follow up film, “Romería.”
Simón’s third feature, “Romería” is part of a trilogy exploring family and sees Simón draw from her own life, this time exploring a pivotal moment from her late adolescence. Lensed by Hélène Louvart, the cinematographer of “La Chimera” and “The Lost Daughter,” the film pays tribute to Simón’s parents, who both died of AIDS-related illnesses when she was very young. MK2 Films will be sharing a promo and script with buyers in Berlin.

“Romería” follows Marina, an 18-year-old woman, orphaned at a young age, travelling to Spain’s Atlantic coast to meet her paternal grandparents for the first time and obtain their signature for a scholarship application. “As she navigates this unfamiliar branch of her family, she is confronted with a past shaped by absence and long-buried emotions. What begins as a practical task soon becomes an emotional reckoning with a family history shaped by the painful void left by a generation lost to addiction and illness,” reads the synopsis.
“Carla Simón’s ability to capture personal history with warmth and authenticity has made her one of the most exciting voices in contemporary cinema,” says Fionnuala Jamison, MK2 Films’ managing director. “With she brings her distinctive sensibility to a new chapter, delicately tracing the reverberations of love, loss, and the unspoken currents that shape every family’s story.”
A Spanish-German co-production, “Romería” is produced by María Zamora at Elastica Films (Spain) alongside, co-producers, Olimpia Pont-Cháfer at Ventall Cinema (Germany) and Àngels Masclans at DosSoles Media. The movie will be distributed in Spain by Elastica Films.
MK2 Films has worked with Elastica Films on a flurry of acclaimed titles including Justine Triet’s Oscar-winning “Anatomy of a Fall” and “The Worst Person in the World.”
