Awkward moment MasterChef fan fails to recognise Julie Goodwin

A woman spoke about Julie Goodwin on a podcast completely unaware she was sitting next to her.

She became one of the most famous people in the country when she won the inaugural season of MasterChef Australia in 2009, but it appears not everyone can recognise Julie Goodwin - even if you’re sitting right next to her.

The beloved home cook appeared on a popular podcast this week alongside a guest who began speaking about Julie, and even Googled what she looked like, without realising she was seated beside her.

The awkward yet hilarious interaction took place on the PodVan Podcast, hosted by Julie’s former Star 104.5 co-host Dave ‘Rabbit’ Rabbetts who interviews random members of the public while driving around NSW in a retro caravan-turned-podcast studio. This week’s episode featured Rabbit and special guest Julie interviewing a Welsh woman named Val in Gosford.

After sharing that she moved to Australia two and a half years ago, Rabbit asked Val if she had ever seen MasterChef Australia and could name the show’s first-ever winner.

“Oh I just saw it the other night and it was mentioned who won it the first time,” she replied, guessing that her name was ‘Rosie something’.

“She makes guest appearances on the show, doesn’t she? And she’s got a book out now about her struggles. I read about that but can’t remember her name for the life of me. I can see her face, but I can’t remember her name.”

While Julie tried her best to stifle her laughter, Rabbit encouraged Val to Google who the first winner of MasterChef Australia was so she could see a photo.

“Julie Goodwin!” she announced as she scrolled through photos, still completely oblivious to the fact that Julie was in the caravan with her.

After Rabbit admitted it would be funny to “let it go and just carry on with the day”, Val replied, “Sod off”.

“Have you just realised?” he asked, to which she bluntly replied, “Yes, I have”.

Julie and Rabbit then burst into laughter, with Rabbit admitting it was the highlight of his year.

“A big thing Val with this podcast is we're just trying to put a smile on people’s faces and have a laugh, and what you’ve just done is going to put so many smiles on faces,” he said.

Since winning the first season of MasterChef, Julie Goodwin has competed on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here, returned to MasterChef in 2022, and is set to appear on the upcoming season of Dancing With The Stars.

An insider told Yahoo Lifestyle that Julie joined the dancing competition with a “secret injury” which she tried to hide during rehearsals but forced her to pull out of the first week.

Hosts Dr Chris Brown and Sonia Kruger will address her absence in the premiere episode, but she does end up taking part in the show.

“Julie was persistent to stay in the 2024 cast and promised the producers she would be well enough to dance the following week,” the source shared. “However, when you look closely during her dances you will see her wearing bandages that you would normally see on sports athletes.”
