Aussie woman transformed $12 Kmart product for heartwarming reason: 'How gorgeous'
Leisa told Yahoo Lifestyle that the local possum enjoys the little staycation up to five nights a week in what was once a cat bed.
An Aussie woman has shared how a cheap Kmart item usually used for cats has been repurposed to create a delightful little home for a local brushtail possum. After uploading the cute story to an online Kmart group, Leisa told Yahoo Lifestyle that the $12 cat cave bed (which she originally bought for $8) has been put to good use over the last five years, with a local possum sneaking his way into the garage to use the bed 3-5 days a week.
In the post, Leisa explained, "In 2020, we got the $8 Kmart cat cave bed for a brushtail possum (who would sit on our garage shelves and look all sad). We installed CCTV cameras to see if he would use the bed and named the camera 'Pandycam'. Now it’s 2025, and I’m so pleased that the bed is still being used!"
$12 Kmart item used as a 'win for wildlife'
She went on to elaborate that the possum is living his best possum life.
"This possum is 100% free and comes & goes whenever he wants. He’s not living in someone’s roof making noises so it’s a win for us and a win for wildlife. He’s living his very best possum life in Belgrave, Victoria."
Speaking with Yahoo Lifestyle, Leisa said they've had several possums visit the bed over the last five years.

"We have had a few different possums visit the bed since 2020. This particular one has been coming and going since around July 2024. He sleeps in the bed anywhere from 3 to 5 days a week," she shared. "We did have a wildlife carer come out a couple of times last year to assist a different possum that was sleeping in the bed who became unwell. We can get reasonably close to them (i.e., to take a photo or give them a little snack). We try not to interfere too much so that they can come and go as they please and don’t become domesticated."
Fans rave about 'The Posstel'
The sweet story was met with a lot of love in the Facebook group, with many enjoying the heartwarming tale and the adorable repurposing of the aptly named 'Posstel'.
"How gorgeous is he and you for doing this for him," one person commented.

"Wildlife have an incredible sense of smell and can smell water from a great distance away. This possum will have been thrilled to find a conveniently elevated and clean water source to drink from with a convenient and comfy bed nearby," another long-term fan said.
