Kmart shoppers praise 'genius' feature of $19 summer must-have: 'So clever'

Entertaining in summer is something many of us love. Unfortunately, the heat in some areas can make it harder to keep certain food items fresh – we've all had to endure 'sweaty' cheese, right?

Thankfully, Kmart has done it again with a new item that is perfect for hosting get-togethers and picnics this summer. The $19 Serving Platter with Ice Tray allows you to keep food cool, thanks to the large tray for ice that sits under the five food compartments.

"This Serving Platter with Ice Tray is perfect for keeping your food chilled, making it a practical and stylish addition to any gathering or event," the Kmart website reads. "This food platter with ice tray will also make a great housewarming gift option."

What perhaps makes this platter even better is the fact that it's BPA-free and dishwasher-safe!

Kmart fans love 'genius' $19 item

Instagram user @ohsobusymum shared a video of her using the serving platter, and saying, "If you're like me and you hate the idea of platters sitting out in the heat with all the meat and cheese on it, you need to go to Kmart and get this serving platter with ice cube tray.

"They're only $19 and you can find them in the party section of Kmart."

She added, "Another thing that I love about this tray is that it has lids, so all the food is covered and protected from flies."

"This is so clever," one Instagram user said, while another added, "So good! Nothing worse than sweaty cheese."

"OMG!! I need this in my life!" a third said.

"Big yes to these!" someone else said.

"Omg this is genius!" another wrote. "Running to Kmart."

"Consider me influenced," one person added.

Perfect for picnics and summer entertaining

Others said they'd be perfect for picnics, while some were shocked that people hadn't heard of these trays before.

"Not y’all acting like it’s a brand new invention? All our mums had these in the 80s girl," one person said.

"Lol mum had one early 80's I think. They're great," another said.

On TikTok, some suggested using things like thin ice blocks or ziplock bags to avoid the base getting so wet as the ice melts.

"Not worth it cos you will be topping the ice all the time," one person said, but @ohsobusymum responded, "I topped it up after an hour and half but it was a hot day. Worked fine! It’s not like it’s hard to pop some ice in it."

Some users also said you could fill the bottom of the platter with water and put it in the freezer overnight, however, thanks to the platter's size, this might not be possible depending on your freezer.

If you do manage to nab one of these (they're currently sold out online), you'll be happy to know that they last, with one user saying, "I've had one of these for about 15 yrs from Kmart."

"I've still got mine after eight years, love it," another said.
