“Superman” Director James Gunn Defends Flying Shot of David Corenswet After Fan Backlash: 'Absolutely Zero CG in His Face'
"People’s faces can look different when you put a wide angle lens up close," James Gunn explained to fans thought CGI was used in the latest 'Superman' trailer
James Gunn is clarifying that David Corenswet's real face is all that is on screen in the latest trailer for his Superman movie.
Gunn, 58, went on Threads Monday, Jan. 27, to respond to a fan who suggested that computer-generated imagery was used to alter Corenswet's appearance in the final moments of a Superman teaser that aired on television on Sunday. Fans took notice of the issue after it aired, and one Threads user directly responded to Gunn's post about the trailer, writing that "there's plenty of time to refine the CG."
"There is absolutely zero CG in his face. People’s faces can look different when you put a wide angle lens up close," Gunn wrote in response. "The background plate in Svalbard is 100% real as is David."

The latest Superman spot gives fans a glimpse at Corenswet, 31, and Nicholas Hoult in their respective roles as Clark Kent/Superman and Lex Luthor in the upcoming reboot. The movie also stars Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl and Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern.
At a preview event for Superman's first trailer release in December attended by PEOPLE, Gunn and Corenswet told reporters that while the new movie is not an origin story for Clark Kent, it meets him early in his career as a reporter with the newspaper The Daily Planet. Gunn also said that he was happily surprised to receive both Corenswet and Brosnahan's taped auditions for the film "on our very first day of casting."
"The thing that I was the most worried about was casting Superman at the beginning of this process," Gunn shared at the time. "And after the first day, I was like, 'Oh, I think that guy’s pretty good.' "
Gunn is hard at work at establishing and fleshing out his newly-founded DC universe.
On Jan. 23, the filmmaker confirmed in a post on X that DC Studios and director Craig Gillespie have started production on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, in which Milly Alcock will star as the titular superhero. Jason Momoa has also confirmed he has a role in that movie as the character Lobo.
Superman is in theaters July 11.
