Sunrise's Sam Mac reveals huge career news: 'Quite surreal'

Fans can expect to see more of the beloved weatherman on their TV screens.

Sunrise star Sam Mac has made a huge career announcement as he reveals he will now be the host of a popular TV show.

Sharing the news on Instagram over the weekend, the weatherman confirmed he will the new host of long-running lifestyle program Sydney Weekender.

The show, which is celebrating its 30th season this year, returned on Saturday with Sam at the helm, showing viewers affordable places to visit, eat and stay around his home state of New South Wales.

The beloved weatherman will be leading a team of 12 reporters in the new role, and said in a statement he was "absolutely thrilled to have an opportunity to play my small part in this incredible show".

"It's such an iconic show with an extremely passionate fan base, who love discovering the hottest spots to visit in our state," he said.

"I can’t wait to take my partner Bec and our baby Margot on some of these wild adventures.

“I’ve watched Sydney Weekender on a Sunday arvo for many years, so it’s quite surreal to think I’m about to be on it! I’m ready to get out exploring our state, discovering the next hot holiday spot and especially excited about the characters I’ll meet on my travels. Bring it on!”

Sam also announced the news to his followers on Instagram and answered one burning question fans had about the announcement.

"As you know, my true life passion is meteorology, so I will be continuing my role as Australia’s 14th most popular TV Weatherman on Sunrise," he wrote.

Sydney Weekender executive producer Jenny Forsyth said Sam would bring "passion, humour and extensive travel experience" to the program.

The Sunrise star replaces Matt Shirvington, who sometimes fills in on the Sunrise desk alongside Nat Barr, as he is now focusing on growing his 7NEWS and 7SPORT commitments.

Fans offered their congratulations to Sam on Instagram after he revealed the career news.

"Congratulations, you deserve all the goodness. Can’t wait to see more of you on our screens!" a fan commented.

"Sydney Weekender is lucky to have you. Glad we’ll still see you on Sunrise too though," a third added.
