Fans of Netflix's Squid Game - and, as you likely know, there are literally millions of us - are rejoicing today as news of the season two release date has been revealed. While most of us don't necessarily associate Christmas with murder for the amusement of bored, rich people (I mean, at least not in my family but to each their own I guess), Netflix apparently feels differently.

The South Korean smash hit series first premiered in 2021 and quickly became the streamer's most-watched series. This was particularly fascinating as the platform hadn't thrown any real marketing budget behind it, making Squid Game a word-of-mouth phenomenon that no one saw coming.

Netflix wasted no time in confirming that the show would be coming back for a second season and fans immediately started speculating on what that might look like.

With the release of the first official trailer for the sophomore outing, we now know a tiny bit more about what could be in store for Seong Gi-hun, Front Man and the next batch of impoverished citizens willing to risk death for the chance at winning millions of won (Korean dollars).

In case your memory is a little hazy, the first season of Squid Game saw Seong Gi-hun and 455 other Korean residents accept a strange offer to go and compete in a series of games for the chance to win 45.6 million won (an utterly obscene amount of money) and finally be debt free and part of the 1%.

The only catch (just a tiny thing) was that if you lose a game you are executed on the spot. But hey! Money talks right?

After winning the games, Seong Gi-hun not only discovers the devastating truth about who was behind the games and why (Oh Il-nam how could you?!) but vows to seek revenge on those still operating the twisted challenge, particularly the mysterious Front Man who we discover is a past winner of the Squid Games himself!

While the new trailer doesn't tell us much, series director, writer, and executive producer Hwang Dong-hyuk told fans in a letter posted on Tudum and Netflix's Instagram, "On the first day we began shooting Season 2, I remember thinking, 'Wow, I can't believe I'm back in the world of Squid Game.' It felt almost surreal. I wonder how it will feel for you to be back in Squid Game after three years, as well.

Seong Gi-hun who vowed revenge at the end of Season 1 returns and joins the game again. Will he succeed in getting his revenge? Front Man doesn't seem to be an easy opponent this time either. The fierce clash between their two worlds will continue into the series finale with Season 3, which will be brought to you next year."

This brings us to our next little tidbit of information...

As confirmed by both Hwang Dong-hyuk and the newly released trailer, yes there will be a third season of Squid Game which will come out in 2025 - but it will be the last season of the show.

Lee Jung-jae (Seong Gi-hun) will, of course, star in Season 2. He will be joined by returning cast members Lee Byung-hun (Front Man), Wi Ha-jun (Hwang Jun-ho), and Gong Yoo (the Recruiter).

New cast members include Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-uk, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, Jo Yu-ri, and Won Ji-an.

The new trailer for Squid Game season two has been met with massive excitement and anticipation, as you'd imagine.

One person even said "This is MY Olympics!" which is both concerning and food for thought.

"The fact that this trailer dropped during the Olympics with an Olympic theme is GENIUS," another said.

"Eagerly waitinggggg," another person wrote.

"Oh my god finally I can sleep peacefully!," another fan wrote (because scenes of people in matching outfits and white Vans slip ons being shot to death are just so soothing??).

"After 3 long years, we get to see this amazing show back at it again," someone else added.

"Crazy how season 1 came out during the pandemic era and here we are 3 years later getting an announcement for S2. Can’t wait!!," wrote yet another enthusiastic viewer.

SHOP:

"OH MY GOD IT'S HAPPENING! AND WE ARE HEARING FINALLY THE PINK SOLDIERS THEME AGAIN!," someone else yelled.

"Oh hell yeah, I’ve been waiting for this in my entire life!" another person said - which must mean they are only three years old and therefore way too young to be watching such graphic content.

Anyway, you get the idea - we are READY!
