After Receiving Back To Back Oscar Nominations, Colman Domingo Explained Why There’s A “Different Kind Of Peace” The Second Time Around
Colman Domingo, the man that you are.
For those who forgot, Colman made history last award season as the first Afro-Latino to be nominated in the Best Actor category at the Oscars. And this year, he’s only gone and bagged a second major nomination.
Yesterday, Colman caught up with Nischelle Turner of Entertainment Tonight to discuss his win — and you could totally sense the joy radiating from him. I felt it through the screen.
Discussing his back-to-back noms, Colman had a megawatt smile. “It’s amazing, the second time around,” he began. “I feel so blessed… I’ve been having a peaceful, beautiful day.”
Interviewer Nischelle pressed on about his repeated experience, asking, “Is it a different peace?” to which Colman wholeheartedly agreed.
“I think there’s a different peace to it,” he answered. “I was putting love around the entire production, you know, any nominations really amplified the film in such an extraordinary way.”
Sing Sing secured two other Academy Award nominations: one for Best Adapted Screenplay, and another for Best Original Song (“Like A Bird.”)
And while Colman apparently “jumped up and down” when the Adapted Screenplay nominations were read out, he was much more reserved for his own category. As was his partner, Raúl Domingo.
“I was just peaceful,” he explained. “I was looking out at the sun coming up a little bit, and then I heard my name.”
Giggling about Raúl’s rather intense reaction to his Rustin nomination last year, Colman concluded that this year, there was “a bit more of a peaceful grace to it all.”
“Raúl did not fall on the floor this year and cry,” Colman added. “He actually just said, ‘Congratulations, sweetheart’ and hugged me.” And ain’t that just the sweetest thing?
Nischelle then mentioned that the last actor to secure double leading man Oscar nominations was none other than Denzel Washington (or “Big Zel,” as I recently learned his sons refer to him as).
“[Denzel]’s such a friend. So I feel like I’m in great company with, you know, people like Spencer Tracy, and Tom Hanks with these back-to-back leading man things,” Colman said. “So I guess it solidifies it, that I’m a leading man.”
On celebrations, Colman revealed that he plans to indulge in some oysters, champagne, and a nice steak. As you should, king.
