Prince William reportedly made a surprising comment after breaking up with his now-wife Kate Middleton over the phone in 2007. A royal insider has revealed that the Prince of Wales, who was 25 at the time, decided to end things with Kate because he didn't feel ready to settle down.

Royal author Rob Jobson reveals in an excerpt from his new book Catherine, the Princess of Wales, which was shared with The Independent, that William broke up with Kate during a 30-minute phone call. At the time, the breakup came as there was growing media speculation that he would propose to Kate at any moment.

"'I'm free!' [William] shouted as he slipped into a drunken version of the robot dance,” Jobson claimed of the moment the prince hung up the phone. "He then told his friends that they should all 'drink the menu', which they more or less ended up doing."

William was reportedly interested in socialite Isabella Anstruther-Gough-Calthorpe. However, she rejected his advances because she wasn't keen on the constraints of a royal life. Interestingly, Isabella is the half-sister of Cressida Bonas, who famously dated Prince Harry from 2012 to 2014.

"This did not cool William’s ardour," Jobson wrote. "He reportedly tried to woo Isabella, visiting her several times at her family home. Despite his evident crush, she apparently rebuffed his advances.

"Few could have predicted that he’d return to Catherine – or that she’d ever agree to take him back..."

Kate didn't waste time moping and was often photographed leaving parties and clubs during the breakup.

At one fancy dress party, Kate dressed up as a nurse, which caught William's eye and led him to make a beeline for her.

"They then spent the first part of the evening deep in conversation before hitting the dance floor, where they ended up kissing," Jobson added.

The pair's reunion was initially kept a secret, but William promised her they'd have a future and later proposed in Kenya in 2010.

William claimed that he made Kate wait so long before proposing because he wanted her to have a true insight into royal life before getting married to the future King.
