THE SHOW | Severance

THE EPISODE | “Goodbye, Mrs. Selvig” (Jan. 24, 2025)

THE PERFORMANCE | Does anyone on television have a more menacing smile than Tramell Tillman? The actor first grabbed our attention during Severance’s freshman run as robotically loyal Lumon henchman Mr. Milchick, the very face of cheerful corporate obedience. But Milchick has been handed a promotion in Season 2 of Apple TV+’s sci-fi thriller, and Tillman, too, has been given more of a spotlight. He rose to the occasion this week, as Milchick raced around town doing everything in his power to keep Lumon’s most important project on track.

This week’s episode gave us the Outies’ perspective on the aftermath of last season’s Lumon rebellion, and Helena Eagan charged Milchick with getting his employees in line. Milchick moved like a ninja in the night, speeding from house to house on his motorcycle, with Tillman flashing a placid grin as he informed Irving and Dylan that their services were no longer needed. When Milchick arrived at Mark’s door, though, he took a gentler tone, and Tillman’s sing-songy voice was downright hypnotic as Milchick reassured Mark that Ms. Cobel “will never descend to that floor again, nor bedevil you out here any further.” Mark wasn’t convinced, and Milchick later paid him another visit, with Tillman commanding the room as Milchick dared to broach the subject of Mark’s late wife Gemma. “You said since she died, every day felt like a year, that you felt like you were choking on her ghost,” he revealed, with Tillman selling every florid word with his confident delivery.

Milchick convinced Mark that his Innie is happy at Lumon (“The solace he has found down there will make its way to you”), and Tillman’s rock-solid certainty almost had us ready to sign up for the severed procedure ourselves. It’s been a pleasure to see more of Mr. Milchick’s personality come to light in Season 2 — and we can promise that we’ll see more of that as the season progresses — and in creating such a fascinating character, Tillman has proven he’s worthy of his own corner office.

HONORABLE MENTION: Jack Coleman

On this week’s Chicago P.D., Disco Bob paid an unannounced visit to his son Ruzek and revealed some devastating news: He has Alzheimer’s. Guest star Jack Coleman made the most of his character’s deteriorating state, showcasing Bob’s fragility and fear in a tender moment between father and son that was equal parts loving and soul-crushing. As Ruzek became the parent, helping to shave his dad’s face and insisting that he move in with him, Coleman’s expression filled with tears of gratitude, as well as sadness for what lies ahead. “I may never get to say this later, so just let me say it now, OK? I love you. I’m very proud of who you are,” Bob choked out. If Coleman’s heartbreaking performance in this episode was a sign of what’s to come, then we’re stocking up on tissues. — Vlada Gelman

We’re used to The Sex Lives of College Girls’ Amrit Kaur making us uproariously laugh at Bela’s sexual exploits and unfiltered commentary, and she certainly had us in stitches during this week’s season finale. But it was an emotional moment, in which Bela took her new love interest Haley’s hand, silently coming out to her mother in the process, that showed us how much Kaur is capable of. In just a few seconds, the actress had us verklempt as Bela went from worrying about her mom’s reaction to relief when her mom wiped away Bela’s tears and embraced her. No words were needed between mother and daughter, but we can’t help offering some words of praise for Kaur’s moving performance. — V.G.
