If there's one reason people tune in annually to the Golden Globe Awards, it's the drama. And not just the one that can ensure live on stage, but the over-the-top fashion walking the red carpet. And this year, celebrities are sporting one of the most ostentatious accessories out there: opera gloves.

Actresses Kerry Washington and Ali Wong opted to wear black opera gloves with bold-hued dresses from Balenciaga, while Abbot Elementary's Janelle James went for a classic all-black look, pairing hers with a strapless gown by Christian Siriano.

Channeling the sultry persona of her Penguin character, actress Cristin Milioti chose a black strapless dress with a thorn-like sequined neckline styled with opera gloves that went as high as her shoulders. The all-black look was also worn by The Last Showgirl actress and Golden Globe nominee Pamela Anderson, who sported a classic tank top black dress with matching gloves. Meanwhile, Wicked actress Ariana Grande gave a subtle nod to Glinda in a vintage Givenchy yellow strapless embellished dress with white opera gloves.

Seems fitting that celebrities would go big on opera levels of drama on the same night that Maria—a film focused on the life of of opera icon Maria Callas and starring Angelina Jolie—is nominated. But even that film's bold take on Old World glamour is not an isolated incident. The fashion pendulum is swinging back to lavish and maximalist trends that make luxury loud again.
